Getting There

Nice short hike, awesome views of the Salt Lake Valley and Great Salt Lake This is a nice, easy trail most hikers, regardless of age or experience, would find enjoyable. The trail is well maintained and the awesome views of the Salt Lake Valley below begin almost immediately. The trail winds behind the peak and ascends up a moderate slope on the back side. The views from the back side are incredible, especially at sunset. The Great Salt Lake can be seen in the distance to the northwest. As you climb to the peak, the entire Salt Lake Valley can be seen below. The view from Ensign Peak is spectacular anytime, but sunset is by far the most ideal time for this hike. The view of the sunset combined with the cool evening breeze and the glittering city lights below make this a hike well worth taking and the minimal time and effort involved make it worth taking often!

Make your way to the State Capitol Building. Do this by traveling State Street from downtown, which will take you past the Capitol on the west side. Take the cross street either in front of or behind the Capitol complex until you reach East Capitol Blvd. Turn left and drive north through the residential area until you reach North Sandrun Drive (940 N) and turn left on that road. Drive about 1 block and the road "forks". In the middle of the fork is an LDS meetinghouse. Take the right fork, which runs behind the church. The trailhead is about 1/2 block further on the right hand side and is a developed, easily identifiable trailhead.

A steep climb and a lot of loose gravel make this trail a little tricky for beginners, but the view is worth it.

this is not 0.8 miles out and back more like 1.8 miles round trip. beautiful views some parts steep. Eat stops needed for low-landers.

This trail is steep but short. As others have said, there are lots of places to stop and get great views along the way. I’m out if shape and it for sure is a workout for me. Almost zero shade. Sunset is the perfect time to do this hike.

It was great! Very Hot! A little steep! But overall great! The only thing is there was a rattle snake right along the path about 3/4 the way up! Just be watchful! Great hike though!

Nice short hike with amazing views of Salt Lake City, the airport, the great Salt Lake and of course the gorgeous mountains! Wear sturdy shoes with a grip as it can get slippery on the loose gravel. Bring a LARGE bottle of water and enjoy the views!!

Great views of the valley. Trail is steeper than you’d expect for an easy trail but it’s not too difficult. No shade at all.

Pretty easy trail, especially if you’re coming from sea level. There are a lot of points along the trail where you can stop and catch your breath before continuing on. Make sure to bring water and wear sunscreen. Best to do earlier in the morning when it’s cool, or in the evening for spectacular sunset views.

Steep trail and will be easy if you’re fit. If you ride the couch a bit more than the average person you may need a 2 minute breather 2/3 of the way up but it’s a nice view and very popular because it’s close to downtown. Everyone who lives around here has probably hiked this at least once before.

Easy hike up - took me 10 minutes at a pretty steady pace and no breaks. There was a decent amount of people there for a Friday night but not overly busy. My purpose was to 1) enjoy the views 2) work on taking some golden hour and sunset photos. If you're wanting to do something similar, the golden hour gives you great pictures of the Capitol building and some of the mountains to the left of the city reflect a beautiful purple color. Then you'll see as the sun starts to set a view of the Great Salt Lake, the airport, and the mountain horizon. I got some decent shots of the transition of day to night, with the mountains showing blue and the sunset orange. I would love to come back again to do more shots. I'm a fan of the Golden Hour App (it shows the times of the various lights and the direction to look for the sunrise/sunsets based off of your location).

Short and sweet. Did this right after the Living Room so I probably puffed more than I would have, but luckily it’s not long. Very sunny, wear sunscreen and a hat. Took an off-shoot on the way down (towards Hell’s Canyon) and had to climb through the memorial thing at the bottom, oops.
