Desolation Peak (9990 ft) via Fantasy Ridge at Park City Canyons Resort: This is an out and back 6.1 mile total trail that starts at the top of Park City Resort Canyons Village Red Pine Gondola and goes to Desolation Peak via the Tombstone, Fantasy Ridge, and 9900 trails. The Fantasy Ridge section is about one mile of walking on a rocky ridge, one section of which is particularly steep and has ropes for assistance for about 20-30 yards. The peak has sensational views! Coming back down can be straight back, or one could use the service road to avoid Fantasy Ridge and then also take a resort trail Red Pine at the bottom to make it more of a loop as is shown on the map. Beautiful wildflowers!
Park at the Canyons Village summer parking at the base. It costs $25/person to ride the gondola to get to the base of this hike.
Can’t get to the trailhead - road is through a gated community. Park city is full of them that make this impossible.
No Red Pine Gondola- so you have to walk from the parking lot. Nobody on the trail once you hit Tombstone. I saw 0 people for 6.5 miles!
this is probably the best hike I've ever done. tombstone is a fun uphill hike through the woods but the best part of this hike is the scramble across Fantasy Ridge. it's almost like a beginner's guide to Angels Landing. ur exposed on both sides of the ridge and have to pay attention to your footing. i never felt in danger of falling but i could see how this would be the end of the road for people who fear heights. make sure to finish this hike by going to the top of 9990. the 360 view is amazing. this hike is easily worth $25 to take the gondola up. i can't wait to do it again.
Cannot drive to the trailhead. You need to take the gondola from the resort. Cost 25$ per person. You can hike to the trailhead from resort
Nice 3.3 mile out and back hike through the woods. Some of the hike is on the ski run. Light rain early for us and then clearing off was nice for a rainbow to appear. I would recommend this hike for the family.
This hike was fantastic 7/22/19. Amazing wildflowers. Steep and shady on the Tombstone part and super fun climbing across the rocky Fantasy Ridge. I did this with my husband a few weeks ago, and climbing across the rope section was a bit scary but definitely manageable. We encountered several folks who had turned around when they got to the steep rope section for fear of heights. This time, I brought along a harness, sling strap, and carabiner to attach to the rope for peace of mind but most would be fine without. Make sure and go all the way to the top of Desolation Peak once you reach the top of the 9990 chairlift. The views in all directions are sensational!
All uphill hike to Desolation Peak. 90% in the trees with a moderate to strenuous uphill the whole way. Beautiful ridge at the end with a rope to hold on to on some of the tricky areas with steep drop-offs. Even if you don’t use the ropes, the hike up to the ropes along the ridge has multiple flat and large boulders and shale to sit enjoy the view. Hike starts at the top of the Red Pine gondola.
