Getting There

After attempts to drill oil, the Crystal Geyser was discovered in 1935 over an aquifer saturated with dissipated carbon dioxide and other gases; these gases are responsible for causing eruptions of cold water. As early as 1869, explorer John Wesley Powell had discovered travertine deposits, suggesting there may have been a spring here in the past. This geyser is manmade, and it has been reported that many decades ago, it would erupt hourly at heights reaching 100 feet (31 m). Over time, vandalism and harm caused to the geyser by visitors has resulted in less powerful and less frequent eruptions. Currently it is reported to erupt twice a day, unpredictably, with eruptions lasting anywhere between a few minutes to nearly two hours.

There are no facilities here. Pack in, pack out.

It is highly recommended that this trail be accessed by vehicle. The section of paved road is mostly unmaintained and the rest is covered with rocks and gravel. There are no facilities, so if camping, be respectful of the land.

From I-70, take exit 164 and drive south toward the frontage road (New Area 51 Road) that runs parallel to the interstate and take a left. At the intersection ahead, turn right onto Crystal Geyser Safari Route and follow it until the road forks, in which you will stick to the right until you reach the geyser.

If I had just stopped for a bit, then I would not have seen the Geyser go off. However, I did camp for the night, it went off about 10pm and continued off and on through the whole night. A nice river runs along the Geyser which was pleasant to listen to as I slept. the only downside was not much easy access to spits for a woman to pee when camping for the night! but otherwise, a cool spot to camp if you are passing through. if you have mountain bikes or dirt bikes, you may enjoy this area too as there are a lot of trails to go on.

It's a decent dirt road with some fun rock formations along the way. We got there as the sun was setting and the colors were unreal. We did not see an eruption but weren't expecting to either so that didn't bother me. It was a favorite spot of the kids.

Beautiful coloration around the base of the geyser to the green river. There were a couple of people there that had been waiting for 2 days for an eruption.

Next to the river. Pretty cool. Had about a 4 foot eruption.
