Getting There
• Throughout spring, summer, fall, and the holiday season, the free Zion Park Shuttle will be required to access this trail, as private vehicles are not allowed to enter the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. As of May 28, 2021, the SHUTTLE TICKETING SYSTEM IS DISCONTINUED, and all shuttle access will be from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is limited inside Zion Canyon, and all parking lots fill early in the day. Paid parking lots, and a free shuttle into the park, are available in the town of Springdale. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/zion-canyon-shuttle-system.htm The Canyon Overlook Trail offers some of the most breathtaking views of Zion Canyon. Located in the Upper East Canyon portion of the park, the trail is actually one of the few official trails in the area. This unfortunately means that the shuttle does not stop at this trailhead. To do this hike, you must enter the park in a private vehicle. You’ll be able to see the overlook from the switchbacks on Route 9. After going through the tunnel, the trailhead parking area is on your right. Parking is extremely limited here, but there are overflow lots further down the road. The trailhead is a collection of stone steps that ascend the ridge directly across the road from the first parking area. The trail passes through shaded alcoves with ferns and trees, across a planked boardwalk and through a moist grotto, and over bare slick rock, wandering its way to the edge of an impressive cliff overlook. Although mostly flat and easy, there are sections with steep drop offs on one side. These sections have railings, but those with children should be careful. You can see the expanse of Zion Canyon from the overlook, with its monumental formations visible on either side. You can see the road as it switchbacks below the west end of the Mount Carmel Tunnel. The West Temple, Towers of the Virgins, Streaked Wall, and Beehives all make up part of this tremendous view. The East Temple rises directly above the overlook, towering more than 2,200 ft above the canyon floor. The Great Arch lies recessed into the cliff-face below the overlook.
Directions from South Entrance: Drive northward to the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. Turn right on to the highway and travel eastward, through the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel to the trailhead on its eastern end. Parking lot with bathroom is on right just after the first (long) tunnel. Trailhead is across the road.

HikingGreat!

Nice trail to complete at the end of the day. We went looking for Big Horn sheep that had been spotted there the day before but we didn’t see any. However the hike was interesting and with excellent views as so many trails in Zion’s have. Finding parking Is problematic. We had to go back through the tunnel 4 times before we found a parking place.

Gorgeous views, short hike, rocky with sand so wear hiking shoes. Parking is limited. A MUST do!

Beautiful hike, but don’t try to come at sunset. There is very little parking and we ended up driving back-and-forth through the tunnel three times before we found a spot. Pretty slick sandstone so wear appropriate shoes and bring a headlamp if you are coming anytime near sunset.

Got up there about 9AM. Sun was shining on far side of canyon. I’d rate trail moderate, but I’m old

It was beautiful. However, there are some scary points if you are afraid of heights. (I am.) I went midday, it was hot, hardly any shade, the rocks are hot, the handrails are hot. I am not sure I would do this trail again. I would not take young children on this trail.

Best short hike I’ve ever done! Awesome looking boulders along the way, a huge cave, some small bridges, and the best view in Zion. Definitely a must!

WalkingGreat!

We ended our week in Zion with this short sunset hike. If you’ve ever hiked before, this won’t be moderate or strenuous. I was wearing a skirt and no socks since I was out of clean clothes. It was an easy breeze of a walk to a good photo opp at the top!

Great trail with the right amount of challenge, spectacular views and diversity. This hot Sunday morning in mid September we passed about 100 people on the trail. At times it was unclear if we were on the main trail as folks have made numerous side trails. I had brought my hiking poles along and wished I hadn't. They were more of a liability than helpful. Watch for mountain goats. We saw some on a nearby cliff.

Short hike with nice views. The parking spots are limited so we had to park in the sightseeing spot hoping to not get a ticket (fortunately we didn’t). It can be sunny so sunblock is your best friend.

Very efficient and fun trail in that it covers different kinds of terrains and views in just over a mile. A large part is shaded, and the only significant elevation is at the start near the trailhead (where parking is limited, but there’s quite a bit of street parking nearby)

HikingGreat!

So happy I came across this hike on some site. What a little gem! It’s located as soon as you come out of the Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel if you’re coming from the main part of the park. The parking lot has maybe 10 spots? Luckily snagged one of those, but tons of people parked along the road in designated areas. This is a great “bang for your buck” trail- it’s short and beautifully scenic. We’ve done hikes like Precipice (Acadia) and now Angel’s Landing, so we didn’t find this scary by any means but I could see why people think it is. There are some parts that are a little narrow without a railing but just take your time and have fun!(People will move out of the way for you.)

Lots of stairs and shear rock faces! Fun, relatively easy hike. Relatively well shaded and great end to a day in Zion as you head east out of the park!

It’s definitely longer than a mile. Rather strenuous and dangerous at times but it’s doable. Great views of the canyon.

Easy hike, trail is easy to follow. Parking lot can get full quickly forcing you to park on the side of the road. Please be mindful of the no-parking areas.

Trail is okay. It provides great views walking along the trail and once you get to the overlook. Do be care care and watch your foot. You can easy twist your ankle do you the uneven rock formation. Enjoy and happy hiking.

June, 2021. Family of 4 with 11 & 6 year old. We are out of shape, so it was a bit more strenuous for us. The beginning is the steepest part. There are several areas that are narrow and slippery. Parking is a bit of a pain, but doable without the shuttle. It's right before a tunnel that is one lane when large vehicles come through. You may be stuck in traffic. Overall, it was a great view and we'd recommend it for all levels of hikers.
