Great drive which opens up to a lot of trail heads of which all are worth doing. For a quick stop do singing canyon for a neat treat.

We needed a break after a tough hike the day before in GSE so we decided to drive the Burr Trail. I was absolutely shocked by how beautiful this road was. We took it from Boulder to Peekaboo Arch. I would have loved to continue all the way to Powell.

paved from Boulder to Capitol Reef, then dirt - if you get onto the dirt and it's icy in winter and you don't have chains then you're pretty much committed to going down the switchbacks and taking Bullfrog/Notem back north which happened to me once and is kinda terrifying with icy switchbacks - if you turn south at the base of the switchbacks the road gets much worse outside of Capitol Reef, then is paved within Glen Canyon (bizarrely, as it's suddenly paved in the middle of NOWHERE, BUT if there have been floods recently at Bullfrog Crossing you may not be able to make it across w/o 4WD (also happened to me, different time) so you'll have to backtrack towards Torrey, so be sure to FILL YOUR TANK in Boulder before setting out !!!

This drive is just beautiful!!! Totally worth it. We took a sedan even though it turns into dirt down the way it's still well-maintained... The views are so exciting on every turn. High red rock canyons, river beds, elevation changes, checkered rock.. red sandy bottoms once you get to the fork in the road at the southern tip of Capitol Reef. At that point we took the fork and went north toward Capitol Reef. Such a serene and peaceful drive, hardly any people.

Definitely take the drive and trip to Strike Valley Overlook. If you don't have a 4x4 vehicle you might have to walk 3 miles to the overlook and 3 more back. Still worth it. If you are risky you can take your 2wd but I'd say you need high clearance at least. The Burr Trail switchbacks are great. The road goes all the way out to Boulder and a lot of it is through Grand Staircase Escalante. Very cool stuff.

Drove this last year after many years of passing the turn-off and wondering what there was to see. Very impressive and scenic drive on a very good dirt road. Unfortunately the reason that I was even on the road was because we have an emergency and the Lake Powell Clinic was the close one so it was one quick drive.

The west end (Boulder town)of this road is paved. Going down the switchbacks is gravel. A short 4X4 trail is just before the switchbacks.(upper muley twist 4X4 road). This road ends at a trail to the Strike Valley Overlook.

Easy 2wd road, paved most of the way. One low spot that can cause problems after a rainstorms, check with the CRNP Ranger station for current conditions. The part of the trail that goes up through the Waterpocket Fold is very scenic.
