Getting There

Mt. Wire (commonly referred to as Big Beacon by locals) is one of the prominent foothill peaks due east of downtown Salt Lake City. Atop Mt. Wire is an old airway beacon, which you can climb should you desire an extra 25 feet of elevation. While Mt. Wire is a relatively low elevation peak, it is an outstanding spring hike of over 2,000 vertical feet with incredible views in every direction, rampant wildflowers, and wildlife that includes the occasional rattlesnake or mountain lion. In most years the peak can be hiked free of snow in April, and is an excellent tune up for the bigger mountains.

The two most popular routes up Mt. Wire are via Georges Hollow, and via Pioneer Park. To get to the Georges Hollow trailhead: Take I-15 4th south exit and continue east through downtown, up past the University of Utah, and turn left (east) on Wakara Avenue. Follow this up past several buildings to the end of the road. Turn right on Coldrow Avenue and go south. There is almost immediately a trailhead that accesses the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, but the better trailhead is a little further down the road (marked with a sign), just before the Huntsman building. Park along either side of the road. To get to the Pioneer Park trailhead: Take I-15 4th south exit and continue east through downtown, up past the University of Utah, and turn left (east) on Sunnyside Avenue. Continue past Hogle Zoo and Pioneer Park, and park at the trailhead immediately east of Pioneer Park, there is a large trail sign here, and parking for about 10-15 cars.

A classic SLC hike with beautiful views in every direction. At the high end of moderate but nothing overly steep or difficult.

The trail is easy to follow with lots of challenging elevation gain. This is a thrilling paraglider launch I've done twice this winter.

Steep incline to start (excellent work). We went a little rouge once we got to first overlook and went down a “creative” route.

HikingGreat!

Had a great time going up and coming down was fine, I didn’t think it was an unreasonable trail or washed out. Was mid 50’s and partly cloudy - perfect for the hike. Climb the tower if you dare! Actually do it, it’s a fun thrill at the end.

It is what it is. Good views of the city. Good quick workout. Went down the ridge and it’s pretty slippery with lose gravel. Didn’t really enjoy that. Couldn’t go fast enough to keep my heart rate up.

Started at about eight. Saw other hikers/runners. There’s a lot of dog bags on the side of the trail during the Bonneville portion :/ Great view

Went at 10 am on a Monday and took me about 3 hours going leisurely with long stops at the Living Room offshoot and the tower at the top. Only saw 1 other person after the fork, a few more on the living room trail specifically, but not many. Lots of covered parts of the trail which was nice for breaks in the heat, esp after the living room fork. Did see a rattlesnake before that fork, so just keep a lookout if the trail is less crowded.

one of my favorite hikes in Salt Lake area. Did it early AM and beat the Sun to the tower at the top. such a beautiful view. looking forward to doing it again. highly recommend but do it early am because there is not a lot of shade once the sun is up

Nice hike to do around sunset. Moderate workout. I would not recommend doing in the middle of the day in summer. We started at 7:15pm and stayed to watch the sunset at the tower. On the hike down, we saw a scorpion (using a blacklight flashlight) and heard/saw some owls.

I like this trail. A great hour of exercise vis Ensign Peak Trail. Rocky and relatively difficult trail going uphill and you won’t see many people. Great view at the top. ~ Julia

Take precaution. We saw the biggest rattlesnake I’ve ever seen on the trail. Steep climbs but one of the best views of the valley, especially at sunset!

It’s a zoo until the Living Room Overlook, and then almost no one after that. Just plan on social distancing for the second half instead of the first. Beautiful sunflowers out and about.
