The trail itself is strenuous in places but completely worth the effort! Make sure you check out the granary and when you head to the Aztec ruins make sure to find the lookout points where you can stand up! They’re on the northwest side of the top of the butte, and are the highlight of the trail!

NOTE: The ruins where you can stand up underneath the rocky overhang are at the top of the butte, on the north western side. They're not well demarcated but definitely worth seeing! This was my favorite part of the hike.
The granary is interesting but deceiving in the photos, it's only a few feet tall underneath the overhang. This hike is moderately strenuous as you hike up to the butte but the view from the top is lovely.

It's ok, but there is so much nicer around

Amazing!!! Beautiful hike and trail with some fun climbing/ scrambling. Totally worth it. We were the only ones on this trail at 7am on October 15th.

Short, easy hike for a great reward at the end! If you have good, grippy shoes you won’t have an issue with this hike at all. Since majority of the hike is just up a huge rock.

We arrived just after sunrise yesterday and had the Butte all to ourselves. From atop Aztec Butte you’ll have super views of the surroundings to include canyons in the distance. We saw a herd of mule deer wander by the base of the butte as we sat on top. This is not a hard hike, but if you have issues with your knees or ankles you should not do this as there are many sections at pretty steep “all fours climbing” going up the butte and some “scoot on you butt” sections coming down. Don’t forget to stop by the granary!

Fun hike but it sure does get a bit more difficult at the end as you scramble up the rocks of the butte. But definitely worth the gorgeous view!

Short sweet and fun scrambling to the top. Good views and easy to follow trail. Cairns everywhere

This place was amazing. It was really cool to see the grainery and the freestanding structure at the top of the butte. The highlight for me was the sandstone dwellings and sandstone arches on the side of the butte.

A little scrambling at the top

The hike up to the Butte was fun for us but wouldn’t be wise for folks with knee/ankle issues. Views were disappointingly hazy in August 2018 from all the fires.

I did the spur to the Ancestral Puebloan granary. It was a moderate trail over sand and rock. It’s so worth climbing along the edge of the butte to see the granary.

A pretty good, relatively short hike. Great views from the top. Do wear boots with decent grip though, the scrambling sections are fairly short but definitely shouldn’t be done in sandals or non-grippy footwear.

I loved checking out the dwellings and granary. Climbing up the was a pretty fun run up to the top. We did this trail in June and appreciated the ingenuity of the food storage. As a history teacher, it was fun to check out the dwellings as well and image what it would be like to survive there hundreds of years ago!

Great trail that's not very busy. There is some scrambling, but not too bad. Great view from the top.

Wow - it does say some scrambling on the description. Sadly I don’t do well with heights and it was crazy windy today. We did the majority of the high, I just couldn’t do the last bit. Views were great.

Glad to have been wearing gripping shoes -- lots of scrambles up rocks. Beautiful views from the top and the graneries were cool to see.

Agree with prior reviews. Definitely happy I was wearing grippy hiking boots. Less crowded than other areas of the park. Lots of lizard tracks in the sand and good wildlife viewing of smaller critters. Surprised a small snake, lots of birds and lizards.

Really fun short hike!

Beautiful views from on top of the butte

More about the views than the dwellings. Skipped the granary spur as ice on north face. Left ice spikes in car! Follow the cairns up the butte trail. Dusty stone necessitating scramble.

Great views and lots of fun scrambling on this hike! starts off in thick sand, so my hiking gaiters kept my feet sand-free, and then had to scramble up the slickrock to get to the top. Tons of fun. I would do this hike again, just for the scrambling fun :) The trail was pretty deserted, too, which is always a nice thing. Saw some people having a picnic ontop of the Mesa, which is a great idea!

A little sand and a little steep slickrock on this trail. Leads to a nice view on the top of the butte. There is also a granary as a side trip

A short, quick hike that takes you down to two Pueblo granaries and on top of a rather tall butte. I'm moderately experienced and had a little huff and puff scaling the second one, but little kids were hiking along rather seamlessly next to me. A varied, interesting hike, just wish it were a bit longer!

we loved every minute of this family friendly hike!! worth it to go past the 'do not enter, dangerous' signs - its just a suggestion. you can't see the best part if you don't. we'll totally do it again. only ran into 4 people on a June morning ...

Nice

Nice payoff for a reasonably short hike. The only challenge is the end where you have to scramble a bit up the slickrock- if it's dry, it's fairly easy. If wet, probably not so much. I also climbed on a really windy day, so that added a measure of interest to the challenge as well. Overall a fun hike well worth the views at the top.

There are 2 main attractions for this hike. The first are the 2 granaries under a ledge at the top of the first butte. Not sure why the trail map on this app leads one clockwise around the butte unless that used to be the trail. The trail itself just leads you to the top and straight across to display sign. From there the granaries are down and to left about 20 ft. Hard to find initially as the "trail" was not well marked here and the granaries are recessed into the overhang. The 2nd attraction is to the top of the large butte. Pretty much straight up the slick rock, which is tough if it's wet. I wouldn't (couldn't?) if it was wet. Fortunately it was dry when we went but I still had to do some 4 legged scrambling. Views from the plateau at the top are pretty good.
