HikingGreat!

I’ve been a bit of a potato for the month of February considering the crumby weather. This was a good hike to get out of my shell and start out March with an easy hike. I clocked in 3 hours right on the dot for 9.9 miles (just a few extra steps and it would have been 10) with an elevation gain just under 1k. The conditions for the trail were great. The loop is rated as a moderate but it’s more of an easy hike without the consideration of the length. Don’t expect any grand overlooking views for this hike. On this early March day I went back and forth between shaded to sun throughout the hike. For what it is though, a long walk in the woods, it is great. The trail does run parallel to the roads at times but it isn’t a distraction as you can still get your nature feel. There are also many options to cut the trails length and head back if you so choose. The trail itself is really geared for mountain bikes and that’s apparent given the lack of technical terrain for a hike. On this day however, there were no bikes but there were a good bit of other hikers.

HikingGreat!

Fantastic State Park with several interconnecting trails around the lake. Our hike was a little over nine miles with more than 1000 feet of ascent. This area east of Dallas has a few more hills than seen across the lower plains region. Not much trail traffic on a cool Saturday hike. I'd call it a five-star hike for the region, and a three-star hike compared to the like of Yosemite or Big Bend for a four-star blended rating.

This park is beautiful. These are very nice trails. There are some bikes. So, we hiked against the bikes.

Very nice trail and not too busy for a Saturday. I under estimated my time it would take to do the entire loop as I was taking photos the entire time and walk leisurely.

Well defined trail, beautiful scenery! Even though you’re never far from the lake and campgrounds, the trees make you feel like you’re deeper in a forest.

Tough. Lots of big roots and tough climbs. Rewarding at the end. We accidentally went backwards making the signage a bit challenging. Felt pretty prions when we were done. Our map told us it was a 1000 ft elevation change so be prepared to work.

I love this trail. Beautiful lake, camp sites and swim area. Skip the EZ trail unless deep sand is your jam. The other loops are in good shape, although A could use some weed whacking. signage could be better. Surprisingly easy to take a wrong turn in numerous places. Add to that, the map at Blackjack trailhead says bikers ride clockwise but the same sign at Northwoods picnic area says bikers ride counterclockwise...

They have recently done a controlled burn on the a and B part of the trail... smells kind of bad. Oh then that it was an absolute gorgeous walk. And a pretty good workout if you do it all.
