This short hike highlights some of the varied and interesting rock formations that can be found in Big Bend. Start off near the waypoint marked "Trailhead" and follow the path of the trail towards the southwest. Off in the distance sits Castellan Mountain, which dominates the sky in this part of the park. The path slopes down to the mouth of the canyon and then makes a near 180 degree turn and heads northeast into the canyon.

Great Little Trail. Dead quiet. Creepy quiet in the canyon. Amazing rock formations. You can see the different layers on the canyon walls. Very hot. Take plenty of water.

We hiked into the canyon and enjoyed the echo of birds at sunset. We heard bats, but we didn't see them fly out. The stones along the bed of the wash are colorful: I didn't expect the vast variety of rocks we encountered. The trail itself is not rocky, but the canyon is. I recommend shoes with ankle support if you're unaccustomed to uneven terrain or have weak ankles. A nice bonus along the trail is the soft scent of the sage brush.

This was a great hike and our kids (6 and 9 years old) loved running through the canyon. We decided to hike up and out of the canyon at the end rather than backtrack. The rock was a little loose but we all made it up to the road without incident.

Awesome hike with some great views of the rock layers. End of December and it was dry. Kept hiking and climbed the boulders to the start of the canyon. Definitely a kid friendly fun little hike.

Great trail but be advised it does not loop around if you go down into the canyon. You hit a dead end and have to backtrack out. Still highly recommended, just a little misleading the way that AllTrails map show it as a loop.

Very short walk to the overlook areas. Much more fun to head down and hike in the canyon itself.

Off of Ross Maxwell Drive. You can see nearly all of the canyon from the overlook. The makeup of the rock is volcanic ash. Very interesting.

Hiked this in the heat of the day. It was pretty but did not see anything that was worth the heat past the overlooks. It had not rained for 4 months so everything was about as dry as it could be....Overlooks are nice but not sure the rest of the hike is worth it.
