Initial ascend on the upper loop is a little difficult but over all it’s a great trail at Franklin mountain state park. A friend and I got curious and wondered off the trail to the top of a Mesa - led to a great view but at the expense of plenty of cacti scratches and wounds due to going off the planned trails. Easy day hike or warmup for Smugglers Pass Loop.

The Sunset Loop Trail (Upper/Lower Sunset Trails) is a must if you hike the Franklin Mountains frequently. We do not know how many times we have walked this path. The high winds at the top of the Upper Sunset part of the trail were a relief to the heat even that it was around 8:00 in the morning on this almost summer day. The loop was completed by using an old portion of the trail existing before the nearby quarry was open, Two highlights events are worth to mention. All the white-thorn acacias on the way were in bloom and their perfume surround us and an owl flying in the middle of the day sealed the journey.

Fun hike, although near the end, apparently I came off the trail and cut my hike short by 1 mile. I don't know how I did, but I did.
