I highly recommend this trail for anyone looking for a semi challenging day hike- amazing views, great wildlife and the trail is very well maintained. bit Rocky on some parts but just bring your trekking poles and plenty of water!

Awesome hike and one of the better elevation gain hikes in this park. Most of the gain is in the first ~2 miles then it’s all views from the top as you hike along the edge of Fortress Rim. Bring snacks and plenty of water and a celebratory beer for when you reach the end of the trail. The trail terminus is a perfect place to take a breather and take in stunning panoramas of the canyon. Would also advise bringing a good wind breaking jacket as it can really get to whipping along the rim!

Nice day hike, once you reach top of Mesa, keep left for walking along canyon rim for great views, or go right to a Jeep trail to the south rim and some great views of the south canyon. The trail to the Duct pond veers slightly to the southeast, and is hard to see so keep a lookout, trail turns east to a steep descent, then take a right turn where two Jeep trail meet. Likely to be dry unless there has been recent rains. Take plenty of water, watch for snakes on the south Jeep trail.

Pretty long hike, do it in the morning as it gets hot throughout the day. Did this in late March, probably be pretty tough to do it in summer. Got lots of great views. If you are up for a long hike, this is better and less trafficked than lighthouse

One of my favorite hikes in Palo Duro Canyon. Great views but be careful when it’s windy because the trial gets about two feet from the edge of the cliff.
