Rio Medina Trail is a 12.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near San Antonio, Texas that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until October.
I think its well marked in case of an emergency. the only thing is missing would be bathrooms we did 16.4 miles round trip no bathrooms. but the trail its self is good.
Not a lot of people. No trails for mountain biking. Lots of switchbacks that are wheelchair ramps.
Great trail challenging switchbacks around mile marker 8.
Tried to take trail from Medina River Nature area, but trail was closed about a mile in, wish they had signage. Drove to Applewhite trailhead (mile 3) and took long ride to Mitchell Lake trailhead (mile 11.5) and back. Accidentally started in wrong direction, found closed trail to Medina again, which added 1.5 miles at beginning. Very nice overall, but not easy on a road bike. Some areas between miles 3 to 5 are roughly paved. The switchbacks are pretty challenging, every one to three miles. Definitely should not be rated easy for bicyclist, I would not take an inexperienced biker here. Switchbacks go down, requiring near stop to turn with heavy braking, then immediately go up, requiring low gears while losing momentum on very sharp uphill turns. Atmosphere and scenery is very pleasant and relaxing. Saw wild boars past mile 8, surprised me. Also saw deer, but no snakes. Bring plenty of fluids, it's remote and tiring on a hot day, even with most areas having overhead shade.
beautiful path that highlights the flora of the south Texas plains and the riparian habitat of the Medina River. Good signage and interesting river overlooks throughout.
Rode this trail and it was quite the workout. I was surprised there were many winding hills to engage, both uphill and downhill. I started off the main highway entrance, and rode 7 miles out before making a U-turn and heading back... mainly because it was hot! I'll hit it again in the future
Some of the paved stretches are a bit rough for a true road bike, but still doable. One stretch of about 100 yards is a caliche detour. Challenging switch backs. Truly unique from other SA area trails because of the switchbacks.
very easy trail but muddy and humid by the river
its not much for views. good if you want an easy straight forward decent length hike or bike ride. not recommended honestly. all paved.
Great trail to hike. Vast majority is concrete. Upper river trail is closed at the time of this review.
