Pineywoods Boardwalk is a 0.9 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Livingston, Texas that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
The Pineywoods Boardwalk or Pineywoods Nature Trail is a short and easy loop that traverses the forests of Lake Livingston State Park entirely by a wooden boardwalk. The forest is a mix of loblolly/shortleaf pine and hardwoods such as white oak, sweetgum, ash, and dogwood. The trail includes a bird blind and pollinator garden area, an overlook of Duck Pond, and a picnic area midway through the loop complete with picnic tables, trash receptacles, and views of forested Frog Pond. The trail is well shaded with the exception of one meadow crossing. The boardwalk is well maintained but not perfectly level due to settling, warping, and repairs. Recommended as a great night hike destination by State Park staff. Accessibility: There is 1 designated handicapped-accessible space in the paved parking lot at the trailhead on the west side. It is van-accessible with striped access aisles. The trail surface is a wooden boardwalk with raised edges and typically at least five feet wide. The estimated grade is gentle (all 3% or less), so this trail will likely be navigable for most wheelchairs/mobility equipment or strollers. There are benches along the trail for resting.
This trail has much needed and improved signage. Still a beautiful and wonderful hike even in the winter.
Nice forest ramble along wooden boardwalk with some nice extras like the bird blind, pollinator garden, information plaques, Duck Pond overlook and Frog Pond picnic area with tables. Interesting to see trash receptacles at regular intervals. Well shaded but mostly relatively young forest, with a few larger trees. No bikes allowed, bike rack to leave your bike at trailhead.
