HikingGreat!

Rocky with some leaf debris making it a little slick at times but manageable. Rugged but not too strenuous Real nature

Penitentiary Hollow is a gem in the heart of Mineral Wells State Park. Really cool rock formations and little caves. Slightly rugged terrain but short hike overall.

A great trail! Some areas are easy to veer off the trail, but it's easy to find your way back. There are really neat rock formations and some little caves, and an awesome rock climbing/rappelling area!

We thoroughly enjoyed this trail! It is a big-rock-y, leaf-covered trail down to and along the lake, past 2 fishing piers, to a really cool rock-canyon-like area. You can explore among and climb the rock walls or take the stairs up to an overlook. Rather than re-trace our steps, we walked the road back to the parking area, which put us at 2 miles. I was happy to have my walking stick and be wearing boots. Even though the Lake Mineral Wells Trail in the Park was closed due to wet conditions, we only encountered one small wet spot and no slippery areas.
