Friedrich Wilderness Park offers approximately 10 miles of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty. It is home for rare birds, terrestrial orchids, steep hills and deep canyons. It is internationally known for bird watching. Perched on the edge of the Balcones Escarpment, Friedrich is a nesting site for two federally listed endangered species of birds: the Black-capped Vireo and the Golden-cheeked Warbler. Restrooms and water fountains are found at the entrance to the park. Visitors are encouraged to bring water bottles for longer hikes in warm weather.

Fun trail with a good mix of some tough areas and easier paths. Does have some narrow paths with some drop offs along the trail. If you have issues with height this may not be the right trail for you. We did it with a toddler on my back in about an hour with a 3 minute or so rest after some of the steeper climbs. Hiking with a mask sucks!!

The route to Fern is a little confusing. When coming back, Fern is up and not towards the fence.

Thouroughly enjoyable! I’m 62 and did the level 4 trails. It was a solid 7+ for my age and experience.

Mostly wooded with plenty of shade with short stretches of exposed trail. Miles of trails, varying difficulties, mostly well marked. Very pleasant.

This trail was great. Lots of pop of color from the mountain laurels.

Always a good one

Great hike for the relation to the city. Crowded near the parking but nice and empty on the outer loops. Very rocky, but fun!

Great views. No pets. Great for hiking. I wouldn't run or mountain bike on this trail, to rocky, a little bit steep at times, and narrow. Great hiking spot though.

great hike. the back side had some moderately challenging inclines/declines that made the moderate rating realistic. Fun times.

It was winter when I went so most things weren’t blooming. But it was a moderate trail as described.

Easy to moderate terrain through south Texas scrub and cedar. Ample shade. No wild life or birds seen. Good exercise and well worn semi-rocky trails.

Good 7.7 mile hike with detour to 2nd highest elevation in park with plenty of ascent, descent, vertical and stairs

Beautiful trail in the country woods. Definitely not a trail if you are looking for the picturesque view point; however there are lovely sights along the way. Proper footwear is highly recommended due to heavy rocky areas, loose stones and large tree roots on the path. At the park, the Fern Loop is labeled as very difficult however I would rate it as moderate. There are inclines or declines depending on which way you enter the trail. Stairs made out of rocks and tree roots, narrow paths and uneven footings in some areas. Not recommended for the inexperienced or children. The park also denotes that it is handicapped accessible with a wheelchair- I have no idea how that is possible. Plenty of shaded areas. Trails are very well marked with maps and signs through out. Definitely recommended for a quiet and serene brisk walk through the woods!

I hiked this trail on October 4th at 8:30 am. The weather was nice. A good percentage of the trail is shaded and the trail is well maintained. It was a fairly easy hike with only one short uphill portion that got the heart pumping. The view was unimpressive at the highest point of the hike. This is a good family trail and running trail. If you are a serious hiker I don’t think this trail system will satisfy you. On the day I hiked it was very busy with people. This trail system also lies below the air path for aircraft going to and from San Antonio airport so it can be noisy.

Beautiful trail! The rocks are a bit slippery, definitely a more advanced trail but it was pretty shaded and had some beautiful calming spots!! Loved it!
