Getting There

The route begins by a walk back to picnic ground entrance, crossing Can Creek where it flows into the Sabinal River, then going up Can Creek to the dam and "The Pond", cross at another pond, continue to the sign at the optional loop. Take a side canyon and creek. Then a steep climb with one switch-back to the top of the caprock. A dogleg along a somewhat grassy but mostly treeless caprock leads to a more gradual but rock-strewn descent to mostly rock-bottomed Dry Can Creek. Cliffs, boulders, water-scoured holes. Finally a ledge trail above the steep, deep ravine that Dry Can becomes, descending back to Can Creek. Cross Can & backtrack to picnic area. This park is beloved for its red and yellow fall foliage, owed mainly to its "lost" biota of Uvalde bigtooth maples, & for its birding, featuring the black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler, but it can be crowded in the fall and access may even become limited. Site of annual volksmarch and daily YRE walk.

Gorgeous and moderately challenging trail. The primitive sites are great as well.

Beautiful winter hike! I did not see one person the entire 4 miles, it was incredibly peaceful. I got a late start and was only able to hike a portion of the West trail. I will be back again!

This was a really great Hike! it is very technical but the elevation is moderate as it says. I would recommend hiking poles if you are a bit unstable. I loved that it was dog friendly because 1 there were a lot of dogs on the trail and 2 my dog totally enjoyed it!

Walking

Plenty of shade and water access. Ability to swim if desired. Primitive areas. Restrooms. Several areas of walking in the dry creek bed and steep parts.

HikingGreat!

Great hike! Mostly shaded and beautiful scenery. Some leaves were changing and the water views were lovely. I took some great reflection pics. The trail is steep in some areas but well worth the effort.

Nature tripsGreat!

Almost entirely covered by shade! It felt like I the city was so far away and I was back on the East Coast, almost. The waters were clear the caves were fun to spot and the steep areas are not as bad at the ones on the East loop. There were I couple of times I would have liked a marker a bit sooner just because the path sometimes merged with the creek bed.

We hiked the West Trail today. Expected to see more fall color that we did, but it was a beautiful hike nonetheless. Lots of other hikers out today. Bring lots of water, it’s warm.

If you are an expert, this trail is for you. I’m not an expert, but I had a great time. Saying that, it was super hard. There is about 1.5 miles very steep going up and another 1.75 going down. It was hard. Did I say it was hard already . But I really enjoyed it. I do recommend it. Bring a loooooot of water, fruits, and snacks. Once you go up you might as well just go all the way. It’s worth the pain.

Great hike..... day started off cloudy cool with a nice breeze. The dust cloud Godzilla had arrived so the scenic views were hazy. Trail was clean even though there were signs of trail maintenance due to storms in past few weeks. Much more hikers and backpackers encountered due to COVID quarantine restrictions eased. Did 7.5 miles and by end of hike sun had burned off clouds and temps were in the 90’s. West trail and loop are awesome on sunny days since it is very shady and cool due to trees and creek water. Get out and hike!
