HikingGreat!Off trailRocky

I SUV camped two days at the beautiful lakeside campsite and briefly explored the surround including this Backbone trail and the main trail to the south (which was closing due to the hunt). I had a lot of fun exploring this trail of volcanic pink granite and gneiss speckled with cactus and yuccas. My little trail dog Daisy really enjoyed climbing rocks and took the lead often. Used to limestone topography I really enjoyed the change of scenery of eroded granitic stacks and cleaved boulders and the caves and overhangs. Rocky but easy and worth seeing this Cretaceous landscape of volcanic extrusions.

Running

The trail offers a beautiful view of the lake. The winter season may not be the best because the waterfall is dried out. Some part of the northside trail is slightly vague, but signposting with reflection is good to help. The bird hiding nearby the north trailhead is pretty nice. If you want to start from the north trailhead, you need to ask for the keycode of the gate from the park staff.

Hiking

A beautiful trail going around the lake with areas of pink granite and modeeate intensity. I was able to take my 5-year-old who was able to walk most of the trail although I had to carry him on some sections when he got tired quite doable for a 5-year-old.

Beautiful! Perfect blue sky and blue lake. Make sure to stay right after the turn by the bridge - we built a cairn, to hopefully help others not get lost like we did!

HikingGreat!

Easy trail with some beautiful views (especially in the Fall!). Our toddlers were able to do most of this hike with us and we completed the rest, backpacking them. Our lab also joined and loved getting to jump in and out of the water throughout the trail.

WalkingGreat!

This was a lovely walk. There is quite a bit of road noise along the entire trail, but the lake scenery is well worth it. I found the trail well marked and very easy. There were lots of kids and dogs. If you’re looking for a solitary/quiet hike, this probably isn’t your best bet.

It’s got it all ... If you like to scramble rocks, do it. If you like a shaded wooded path, it’s there. Cliff jumping into the lake, bring a swim suit. Depending on the path taken, hiking sticks are a good idea. A fabulous November outing.

Nice and easy hike, but watch your step because it’s easy to trip and fall. The swimming spots are calm and refreshing, especially in the summer. It’s an easy day trip from Austin and worth the drive.

Where the GPS took me was a private road and the next access point appears to be through Inks State park which is fully reserved until July 1
