HikingFeeGreat!

We went the first weekend in April and loved it! The wildflowers were just coming out (may have been a little late due to the cold winter) and the landscape changes a bit as you go, keeping it interesting. We took our dogs and they did great. Made a reservation the night before for the day pass. We thought about taking another car but the day pass was all sold out when we checked in the morning so be sure to get your tickets early.

The trails are beautiful this time of year! Lots of wildflowers, and the water is high enough for the falls. The sun is getting hot though, so I think we went out too late and had to turn back early. Hoping to catch this trail again, and start earlier in the day.

HikingFeeGreat!

Beautiful trail. Beginning .2 miles or so are very crowded with people taking the small scenic trail. Thins out so that we had good portions of the trail with no one else. Great views of the hill country.

HikingFee

The park has a fee for entry and all the overnights were full. Stayed for a portion of the day and hiked this neat path. A fair amount of people during Spring Break. The bird blind at the end of the trail is quite nice, thanks for that State Park staff!

HikingGreat!RockyScramble

Easy to moderate (out and back) trail hikes along the NE corner of Inks Lake and Spring Creek. Mix of soft sand surface with some rocky areas. Lots of excellent overlooks of the lake, creek, and small waterfalls. For adventurous hikers, your can rock scramble and hike across sections of the falls, but rock surfaces are dangerously slippery.

HikingGreat!Off trailRocky

I SUV camped two days at the beautiful lakeside campsite and briefly explored the surround including this Backbone trail and the main trail to the south (which was closing due to the hunt). I had a lot of fun exploring this trail of volcanic pink granite and gneiss speckled with cactus and yuccas. My little trail dog Daisy really enjoyed climbing rocks and took the lead often. Used to limestone topography I really enjoyed the change of scenery of eroded granitic stacks and cleaved boulders and the caves and overhangs. Rocky but easy and worth seeing this Cretaceous landscape of volcanic extrusions.

Running

The trail offers a beautiful view of the lake. The winter season may not be the best because the waterfall is dried out. Some part of the northside trail is slightly vague, but signposting with reflection is good to help. The bird hiding nearby the north trailhead is pretty nice. If you want to start from the north trailhead, you need to ask for the keycode of the gate from the park staff.
