Haynes ridge trail takes you from the valley floor to the top of the mesa offering scenic views of the area. Haynes Ridge trail head is .3 miles down the Canyon loop trail. It quickly climbs steeply to the top of the mesa. Trail is easy after you reach the top. The trail can be extended or made into a loop if you return on the Upper Canyon Trail.

Challenging and fun!

Definately need tons of water!! The most difficult part is right away going up the mesa (like straight rock climbing) but after that it's smooth sailing till you get to the cave. Make sure you bring tons of water, I went through about 1.5 liters and it was only 55°. We attempted to go through North Prong but got turned around and ended up back on the ridge trail (it's not marked well after the cave). Next time I'll go up through the prong or upper canyon trail first!! Going back down isn't nearly as bad as going up. Can't beat the views though!!! It's beautiful!

Don't let North Prong fool you. Be prepared for a fairly challenging hike once you head west off the main trail to the over look, it a a pretty rocky and a little unstable in places but the view from the top is beautiful. The walk across the top is not bad at all with great views of the the green mesquite, cedars and red canyon. Once you start the decent back down the canyon things can get a little sketchy, the trail is not very well marked and some of what you think are trails actually dead end at the edge of the cliff. Once at the bottom Fern cave is a nice cool spot to take a break and enjoy the view. The rest of the trail out isn't bad at all. To sum it up, take lots of water, the canyon heat can be killer(literally),wear good shoes and watch for rattlesnakes they are fairly numerous in the park.

Fun, but not effortless by any means. Steady incline met with an awesome view at the top. Going back down can be hazardous for anyone (age or fitness level.) The switchbacks towards the end get sketchy. I took the upper canyon trail past the parking lot, then hopped on to Haynes Ridge right after the Fern Cave (Awesome even in January) Caprock Canyon is very charming.

Very easy trail for most of the trail until you have to go down the trail from the overlook. My friend and I took the upper loop trail and ended at the overlook trail. Going down was the only challenging part. Not marked at all on the descent so we had to assume we were going the right way, which was scary but the view at the overlook was very beautiful!! I definitely want to go back and do it again.

The trail does provide good views once you get to the top, but ordinary otherwise.
