So great! So great! I read a review that said not good for hiking. I strongly disagree. It had winding trails leading up and down hills. I saw goats and cows! Beautiful! Also it's free (unless I did it wrong)! Bring lots of water! I went 4 miles, but I could easily have done less or more. It's easy to find your way back whenever you get tired, because the parking lot is visible most of the trail.
Awesome trail system!!
This trail is NOT for hiking at all. Only mountain biking.
Our trail System is now 28 miles of looping single track. 15 miles on the lower loop and 13 miles of upper loop. The lower loop can be classified as an intermediate difficult or high speed technical. The upper loop will be more difficult, but, mostly high speed technical. There are three difficult climbs to hill tops on this loop. The trail across the top of flint hill is slow speed technical with lots of rock ledges to go over. Individual ledges are not that bad, but there is lot of small ledges to cross. Either you will hate or love the top of flint hill or maybe both.
We also have a green arrow loop made up of both the lower and upper loops and is 10 miles long. This loop is more beginner friendly. The green loop is made up of mostly red arrow loops, but, shortcuts around big climbs. If you're not a beginner rider it's a smoking fast ride.
We are open from January 1st till last weekend in October. We are closed November and December for hunting season, we do not have any openings for hunting. Our hours are sunup to sunset. Please allow 3 hours before sunset to ride either the upper or lower loop. Check flatrockranch.net for trail closures due to events and admission fees.
What a great trail system! Maps are accurate and the one-way trails make the ride so much more enjoyable since you don't have to worry (as much) about barreling into someone on a downhill or getting plowed down on an ascent. There are warning arrows on drops, with one to three depending on the difficulty. Loved it here, and it really shows you how in, or out of shape you are! The climbs can be brutal but fun and then you get the rewarding downhills. Jimmy is great and his attention to detail in building his park shows his love for our sport!
Flat Rock ranch is a great mountain bike
Trail System that only allows mountain bikers and trail runners to use the trails. No hiking or bird watching is allowed. We are turning away people intent on hiking our trails. We want our bikers and trail runners to know they can Cruze at speed without fear of interfering with someone's hike. I need this site to take hiking and bird watching off the list of
Things to do
Loves this place. The owners are great!!
I love riding at this place. Lower + upper loop is about 27 miles. Lower loop is real flowy and the upper loop gets more technical and rocky.
Been living in Houston for 15 years and finally decided to ride this trail. Stayed in Comfort at a BB. Morning of ride had a rain shower, trail dried quickly. Rode the lower loop following the red arrows with numbers on them, so easy to follow. 1-32 I believe. Anyway, great ride. Switchbacks, about 6 small technical areas that need to focus on line. Does have sharp rocks so be mindful of your tires. Normal casual riding pace took 3 hrs. to complete loop. Climb, descend, repeat. So make sure on hot day to bring enough water. Have to go back and ride the Upper loop. Worth the 4 hour drive for an overnight trip.
Beautiful Texas hill country. Not for beginners. Upper Loop is a beast! The first 2/3 are filled with big rocks and steep climbs. Just when your spirits break, the downhills begin. Berms and quick corners. Much less physically demanding than the earlier sections but still requires concentration. Definitely worth the drive from SA but build your skills on some easier trails before heading out.
A mountain bikers playground, Flat Rock Ranch was a blast and fairly challenging. I ended up riding about 10 miles around the western side and a little on the eastern side. The best thing about the ranch is the diversity it offers. You have the chance to ride over the rocky hill tops and the green draws and even a few really open pastures. On the hill tops the vegetation is low enough that it allows you to enjoy the view while you ride. Also, the trails are fairly well marked and easy enough to follow. All in all I am looking forward to getting back there as soon as possible. I am an intermediate riders and I found it very enjoyable.
Love this place for mountain biking. Challenging and technical in some spots. Awesome trails, highly recommended. There are several xc races here each year.
