This is a good short hike if you stick to the upper section of the trail (the first 1.5 miles). If you go down into the lower canyon, the climb is pretty tough to come back the Canyon Rim trail, but not much easier if you return via the Equestrian campground and the road back to the trail start. The best views are in those first 2 miles, after which you are in the bottoms. Near the entrance of the trail between it and the campground bathhouse is a community of prairie dogs that should not be missed.

I did the Canyon Rim Trail as part of an overnight loop that took the Mesa Trail to the Lower North Prong Trail and eventually the Lower North Prong campsite. There are fantastic views along the canyon rim. It is easy going and well marked. I detoured to avoid ~15 bison near the trailhead. Make sure to bring water!

Easy trail, mostly flat. We took the spur trail which loops around but continued a half mile out on the rim trail before turning back. Trail is mostly packed truck tracks with many mini trails that offer fantastic views.

Nice day hike, bring water and don’t do it in the summer, I can’t wait to do the trails in the fall.

Nice day hike. Not much shade. Lots of wildflowers. Saw Bison, prairie dogs, burrowing owls, and a roadrunner. Lots of flies so take insect repellent. We did not do the loop, just out and back from the campground.

Fantastic trek, well defined trails (for the most part). We did the upper trail loop... appx 6.3 miles. The climb was fantastic to to the highest point in the canyon. The climb down was steep, rugged and lots of lose rock. What got us was not the trek or trail but the heat. Do Not Do it in summer... the last mile back to the parking lot was the hardest because of heat. But the views and climb up and down were great.

Great experience! The prairie dogs and bison did not disappoint! Views were spectacular! Definitely glad we turned back and didn’t go into lower canyon as that looked difficult. Wear sunscreen and be willing to wait out the buffalo on the trail.

Nice trail , but I find the northern trails more varied and exciting. However, you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful hiking here. Recommend going with a group. Watch out for the bison that roam the area. This trail is easy. The park also offers more difficult trails up into the canyon walls. Have fun!

Wear sunscreen - no shade! Wear lots of bug spray - horse flies are obnoxious. See bison, check out the canyon. I also added on the Mesa Trail, but can't seem to find it on here. Ran into some bison and it got a little scary being alone!
