Getting There

Big Bend National Park charges a fee to enter. Fees are $30 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle. If you are entering on foot, horse, or bike the fee is $15 per person. You can also purchase a park specific annual pass for $55. This scenic trail covers 2.2 miles round trip and ends at a spectacular balanced rock formation. Beautiful, easy trail! Road is bumpy but I made it fine in a Ford E150

This trail is easy, but be prepared to take a lot of water. Did the trail mid day, so the sun was brutal. Not a lot of shade until towards the end. Worth it. Beautiful view.

This was a cute little trail to a great view! Absolutely worth the short and easy hike. Keep in mind the actual road to the trailhead is gravel and unpaved, so although it’s a short road, allow yourself 40-50 minutes each way.

Amazing adult playground at the end, spectacular views and rock formations. How is this not the most popular trail in Big Bend? Hmm ;)

HikingGreat!

Iconic landmark in Big Bend. Road to trailhead is unimproved. I wouldn’t drive a sedan but I saw people doing it. Since it was dry, we didn’t need 4-wheel drive. The last 1/4 mile is steepish and rocky. Mild climbing involved. I saw children in the trail and even at the top. Worth it.

One of our favorites! A top hike for families for sure! Our three-year-old made it almost the whole way, I wouldn’t recommend for kids younger unless you carry them. A nice gravel path until the last bit, which is all Boulder climbing. The kids loved it!

HikingGreat!

The trail itself is easy 90% of the way. The incline and technical bits are all at the end and not too tricky - lots of fun! Extra beautiful view on a sunny day. The off road drive to get there was challenging.... my partner did the driving and I was anxious about bottoming out in our sedan or getting a flat the whole time. Doable yea but not ideal!

HikingGreat!

Really nice trail: flat until the last 0.25mi, then a fun technical challenge to get up to the balanced rock and view. Be warned this is at the end of six miles of rough road, including some big bumpy hills in the last mile. The parking lot is small and there are few places to turn around.

There is 6 miles of driving on unpaved, bumpy roads full of rocks and stones. IMO an AWD will make it easier but it could be done in a sedan too - leave it to ones own judgement. The parking lot is very small. The trail is fun. Lot of scrambling on rocks in the end - there is no marked trail but one can see the end and make a path thru the rocks.

This is a must do when visiting Big Bend, however the road out to this trail is unpaved and rough. The route will take 20’ and so I caution visitors to make sure their cars can handle the trip. Once at the trailhead, the journey begins on a soft, sandy path winding through the canyon up to a rocky scramble leading to the balancing rock. Once at the peak, you have plenty of areas to continue scrambling while taking in the views!

Lovely! Some challenging rock climbing that may require supervision if hiking with kids but definitely worth the climb.

This was a fun little hike. Even my 7yr old daughter really enjoyed it. Simple out with a rock scramble at the end if you want to climb around a bit. It made for some great views and good exercise.
