This scenic trail covers 2.2 miles round trip and ends at a spectacular balanced rock formation. Grapevine Hills Trail is an easy hike up a sandy wash surrounded by massive boulders. After 1 mile the trail ascends to a low saddle at the end of the drainage. Follow the signs to locate the giant "window" of boulders. This is one of the most picturesque spots in all of Big Bend NP. Kids love this trail! The trailhead is located 7 miles down the Grapevine Hills Primitive Road. Ask a ranger about current road conditions.

Short trail, mostly flat, last quarter mile scrambling up some boulders. Easily done. We saw parents with small children doing it. View at the top is awesome, balanced rock makes a great frame.

Really nice trail, after the long gravel drive to the trailhead. I would recommend your trekking poles, as the last quarter mile of the hike is more like rock climbing. The mountain, and the balanced rock is excellent!

Nice, short scramble at the end, maybe 1/4 of a mile. The balancing rock was pretty cool, too. Be careful on the road out. It’s starts fairly easy but gets progressively worse. You may need a high clearance vehicle. I would definitely do this trail again if I came back.

This trail was kid friendly and beautiful views from the balanced rock. The last 1/4 mile was pretty steep but definitely manageable. Would highly recommend. I am confused why this trail is listed as the Balanced Rock Trail when the actual name of the trail is Grapevine Hills Trail??

This is technically Grapevine Hills Trail + Balanced Rock Trail. Grapevine was an easy, well paved trail. My kids (5 and 7) and their grandparents handled it just fine. Balanced Rock was a rocky climb up that I’d call a moderate trail but well worth it for the final view.

Highly recommend this trail. beautiful scenery and the balanced rock is amazing.

It’s a great short hike with pretty views. Not to be missed! Came here after a cold front in November and many of the boulders were very icy and slippery.

Great hike - my kids ages 12 & 9 loved it. Lots of photo ops on the rocks.

Our family of five loved this hike! Made it no problem with three kids 10, 8, and 5 but they are used to hiking. 3/4 of a mile flat and easy and then 1/4 mile climbing. Worth the climb! The off road drive to get to the trail head is long. No problem in the Jeep but I think it would be difficult in a car. Recommend getting an early start. We were pretty hot on the way back to car (at 11:00am) in October.

Easy hike in the early morning when it's not too hot. Kid friendly. The balanced rock is very neat.

Hot! Walk through the desert about a mile to reach the base of the hill you have to climb, and then a decent little hike up to the balanced rock. Might be a bit challenging for those with older bones. Views are spectacular, and there are a lot of little scramble type opportunities to get pictures from different angles.

Easy hike for a great view of cool rock formations. We went early in the morning and saw lots of lizards and other wildlife. Saw more wildflowers on this hike than any other we did and the desert vegetation was very diverse here. You do climb up some rocks to get a view of the balanced rock at the end but it wasn’t anything hard. The drive up to the hike on the dirt road was a little rough. You’d have to take it pretty slow in a smaller car but could still make it. I’d consider this one a must if you’re coming to the park.

Personally, I wasn’t too big of a fan of it. It was hot, and sure the rocks were pretty, but to actually see the balanced rock, you had to scramble up a very rocky and dangerous looking hill. Scared of injury, we had to head back and weren’t even able to see the rock. Other than that, the trail was very easy. Sure the sand kind of sucked cause it was a bit troublesome, but overall a very easy walk. Recommended for kids cause the mountains are very interesting to look at. Adults might be impressed for the first five minutes, but it really loses its appeal fast.
