Getting There

Big Bend National Park charges a fee to enter. Fees are $30 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle. If you are entering on foot, horse, or bike the fee is $15 per person. You can also purchase a park specific annual pass for $55. This scenic trail covers 2.2 miles round trip and ends at a spectacular balanced rock formation. Grapevine Hills Trail is an easy hike up a sandy wash surrounded by massive boulders. After 1 mile the trail ascends to a low saddle at the end of the drainage. Follow the signs to locate the giant "window" of boulders. This is one of the most picturesque spots in all of Big Bend NP. Kids love this trail! The trailhead is located 7 miles down the Grapevine Hills Primitive Road. Ask a ranger about current road conditions.

Hiking

Hike was flat and easy, except for some boulder scrambling at the end... be careful. To get to the hike, you need to travel down a 7+ mile dirt road (SUVs highly recommended). The Balanced Rock is quite impressive, but even more impressive is the view of the valleys and mountains on the other side. Recommend to pack a picnic and enjoy the view. But remember to pack out EVERYTHING you bring in, even your food scraps! :)

HikingGreat!

This is a quick hike with such lovely views! The hike it self isn't too strenuous, when you get to the end you have the option of scrambling different rocks, which is pretty neat!

Easy, relatively flat trail with only the last .25 mile being moderate/strenuous based on your hiking ability. Steep climb for last .25 mile to balanced rock. You can definitely do just the Grapevine Hills trail and still enjoy the sights! Recommend going early evening as the trail is in full sun otherwise. Perfect spot to take a lunch and enjoy the balanced rock! One of my personal favs!

Absolutely gorgeous!!! Rock scrambles made it fun and different from the hikes that I typically do. Definitely recommend but you need 4x4 to get to the trail

Flat until the end. Fun rocky path up to the rock. Cool rock formations along the way could be mistaken for something in Utah.

This trail is easy, but be prepared to take a lot of water. Did the trail mid day, so the sun was brutal. Not a lot of shade until towards the end. Worth it. Beautiful view.
