This is my favorite trail for a nice hike!! I been to this trail 100+ times since Im near by and last time I was there about a week ago I went up and down 3 times just to complete my 10 miles mark for the day. It is a challenging hike for beginners but you get use to it and believe me, when you on top of the mounting is just breathtaking
This is my very favorite Radnor Lake hike. I specifically like to hike it an hour before sunset. This is when all the woodland creatures are surveying the forest to plan out their evening. Hopeful, playful, hungry sounds slowly fill the cooling air as long shadows grow into a twilight darkness. Few people choose this trail, since it doesn’t provide some of the lake views other trails offer; however, South Cove has some of the largest trees in the park and these woods have a unique calm to them. Once you reach the ridge, the evening breeze seems to wash away everything you brought with you to the parking lot; you descend the hill and walk the lower edge of the loop feeling refreshed and renewed. Note: There is a bench positioned in a little spur trail along the ridge. This is a great place to stop, lay down, close your eyes and bathe in the forest.
Nice trail system but busy. Go early or when cooler out. This hike was done when it was about 40 degrees and after a day of rain and it was beautiful. The lake trail is nice but is the busiest. Both the garnier ridge and south cove loop are a little less traveled and were really nice with the downed leaves adding some color This recording is for the entire trail system.
I combined the South Cove Trail with parts of the South Lake Trail. As a beginner hiker, this was the most difficult hike I have attempted yet due to the steep elevation climbs, but this hike may have been the most rewarding. There is much to admire here in terms of wildlife. I saw chipmunks near the trail, and a deer crossed my path just 10 feet in front of me. There have been some safety concerns at Radnor with the recent attempted assault of a woman on the Ganier Ridge Loop Trail, but I came across another hiker who frequents the park who says she still feels very safe on the trails which made me feel better.
Excellent hike. Good elevation changes. We saw a snake, accidentally stepped on a lizard’s tail and saw it break loose, lots of squirrels and chipmunks, of course. It was a solid 20 degrees cooler under the shade of the trees on this trail than it was elsewhere. 8&9 year old kids managed this one easily, but it was a little scary for their mom as they wanted to run downhill with large drop offs on one side of them. No such worry for adults. Just know if you’re taking kids you’ll want to be sure they’ll listen when you tell them to slow down.
