We camped at Cade's Cove and hiked up to the AT and back. It was 13.13 miles round trip starting at the campground. The Anthony Creek portion had lots of running water with spans and rock crossings. The Russel Field portion had lots of stones and exposed roots so you have to watch your step. We were disappointed by the lack of opportunities to view vistas, even at the top. The foliage as beautiful.

Did this trail late Oct.2016, a very nice hike. Horses expose roots and rocks so that makes it a little rough. We were still able to get water from the spring that 's below Russell Field shelter.. Went on AT south to Mollies Ridge shelter. The sign at Russel says 2.5 to Mollies but the sign at Mollies says 3.6 to Russell it did seem a long 2.5 . Nice shelter, great sun rise! about 15 miles round trip from Cades Cove C.G.

This was part of the end section of a reverse lollipop so I was coming down. Except for one steep section, maybe a mile, it is relatively flat. The trail is rocky in some areas (horse trail) but a very enjoyable hike overall. I had great views coming down the trail. Would definitely do thing one again just to hit the campsites or even the shelter.
