We went right at the first fork, for an easier trek on the loop home. The view was nice, nothing spectacular. Take bug spray.

Awesome scenes along the way with rock face type cave. Really neat overlook at the most outward point and totally worth the hike. Hike was pretty easy, did with our 2 young kiddos (4,7) At the loop fork if you go right there is one skinny spot on a rock face but pretty easy if you go slow. To the left is an easier trail but a tad longer. We went out, took right on fork going out and coming back in so did whole loop section and really enjoyed it. Highly recommend if you’re at all close to the area!

Bird Watching

Excellent plateau hike for the novice. Trail travels through hemlock, oak forest with great sandstone bluffs to observe. Hooded Warblers and YB Cuckoos were highlight among numerous vocal Red-eyed Vireos. If you’re birding, be sure to spend time in the meadows around Astronomy Field.

Short interesting trail. Not as remarkable as some reviews, but still worth doing. Took 45 minutes to complete. In that short time, our car was broken into in the parking lot and a wallet, ipod, and a notebook computer was stolen. Welcome to Fentress County.

Beautiful trail, some step points that are more moderate than easy also drops that are steep when you get near the canyon. Beautiful and easy to follow path with signs. It is 1.75 miles

Very good hike with many great land features. So far though, this is the best lookout we have seen within easy hiking from the start. Within 1 mile or so you will be on top of a bluff overlooking a gorgeous scenery across the land. Too bad we missed the fall colors by a week or so. This would be a serious Ansel Adams photo op.

Short, easy loop with an out and back to the overlook. That’s the reason for the hike. The view of the canyon is spectacular. I was here on a Saturday morning and had the trail to myself. Calming to just sit in the quiet of the overlook for a while. And don’t miss the wildflowers growing around the parking lot at the trail head.

Great elevation gain and beautiful views and rock formation. Only hiked half since we had a toddler and hubby had to go in to work. Definitely will come back to complete, probably without children. I like to keep a certain pace on the trails that have great elevation gain. This trail continues to another that is about 6 miles, definitely want to see what was missed!

Enjoyed this as a nice end of day hike. We powered through but the overlook is worth the whole thing. Not a hard hike and well worth the scenery.

Found this trail while geoaching in the area on 6/10/2018. The trail is fairly short but scenic. The trailhead kiosk had some interesting info on the "Pickett's Dark Sky Project".

Double back a little from the overlook and go down the steps into the canyon. Be sure to see the Killdeer Arch/ Mesas, you’ll still end up at Black house Mt Rd. Nice hike. About 3.5 mi. one way

If you go you must take the trail that goes down under the overlook to see all this area has to offer, so much more to see than just the view from the overlook, much longer hike but well worth it.

This is another hidden gem. Well-graded, well-maintained, lightly-used, lovely woods. The overlook reminds me of Savage Gulf only smaller. There is a lovely bench on a rock shelf that invites you to sit and enjoy the woods awhile; I was trying to do it pretty quick, but I couldn't help but linger there a bit. It's also next to the Pickett-Pogue Astronomy Field.
