A great hike that is wooded and shaded the vast majority of the way. There are some rocky areas and a few good climbs so be prepared. This trail takes you past three waterfalls and lots of beautiful overlooks.

Breathtakingly beautiful! The two South Cumberland State Park rim-traverse trails are at the top of my favorite Middle Tennessee hikes list. You pass over a dozen waterfalls and a dozen bluff overlooks, then you rock-hop along miles of cascading creeks. The forest is striated into diverse speciation based on the terrain: some areas are choked with sassafras, birch and pine; some with post and white oak, sugar and silver maple, and sweet gum; others with old-growth hemlock and ancient tulip poplar. The route begins on the south side of the eastern rim, just below Foster Falls and runs north to the conjunction with Dog Hole Trail and Raven’s Point. From here the route SHOULD (but doesn’t) turn left and continue to the Raven’s Point overlook (the turnaround for the out-and-back trail). This route perplexingly stops just before the Raven’s Point spur trail. Rather than stopping at Raven’s Point, I continued to the northern South Cumberland trailhead and returned via the Fiery Gizzard: Grundy to Foster Falls Trail. With a round-trip distance of around 26 miles over some challenging terrain, this was a serious workout for one day (but totally worth it). A trail update needs to be submitted by someone willing to do a clean recording from Foster Falls all the way to Raven’s Point. Not only does this hike not take you to Raven’s Point, it also misses all of the new waterfall gorge dips that they’ve added to the trail. Make sure you follow the white trail signs and markers in lieu of the recorded AllTrails route. The new official route takes you past some of the most beautiful waterfalls and cascades in the park. The massive stone stair infrastructure they installed is not only impressive in its scale, it’s a work of art, complementing the surroundings. You don’t want to miss these areas. The recorded route takes you across private property and a very unmaintained trail segment at the end of the route.

CampingGreat!

My brother and I hiked this trail and camped over night in the small wilds campsite. It was gorgeous, we had coffee on an overlook not far from out campsite and had two small hummingbirds randomly fly up to investigate. This trail takes you past three water falls and lots of beautiful overlooks, and it is shaded most of the trail. We did get a little lost right before Raven's point on the rocky area after a little bridge Google maps took us off in the wrong direction. Definitely gonna be doing this again soon.

This was an excellent challenge! Did it in one day, with stops, and a swim. Beautiful overlooks are around every corner in this hike. The ticks however, are relentless! Between the three of us hiking, we must have seen 30-50 ticks on our clothes, and have about 15 actually on us. Use max deet bug repellent, and stay center on trail!

Great hike. Wooded and shaded the vast majority of the way. Some rocky areas and a few good climbs. The hike is a good bit longer than estimated. Also, the AllTrails map is an old route. The actual trail on the ground is easy to follow though. We took the AllTrails route (requires bushwhacking) on the way out to Raven’s point and followed the trail on the ground on the way back.

Great trail but I don’t know why you would do this and not go out to ravens point. Three descent and climbs, but not terrible. Ravens point is beautiful as is foster falls
