We went counterclockwise... the beginning was a fun rock scramble, followed by a magical walk along a creek. Lots of road noise about halfway through, which is the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5.

A main area of Custer state park. Nice views of the lake, and fairly easy. A popular spot and a good one.

My star rating is for the views. Very pretty. But this trail was extremely popular. On a Monday we drove around for 25 minutes round and round just to park. There are less crowds at the other lakes. Easy hike and good for all levels. Stockade lake had hardly anyone at it in the same day. Also a great swimming hole. Much larger. Better for kayaks etc and has a trail.

Nice walk around a pretty lake. There were a lot of other people there. There was no swimming in the lake when we were there and several nearby trails were closed due to wildfires.

So crowded it wasn’t worth it. Sure. The views are great but I walk through crowded city parks that have less traffic than this.

Best surprise of our trip to Mt Rushmore. Truly magical place. Trail around lake is more like 1.75 miles. Wide variety of biospheres. Never a dull moment. Low 70s on July 19th above 6000ft.

Great trail. Kids loved climbing on rocks. The lake was beautiful, not even a ripple. I hear it can be a busy trail. We were there around 7:45 am. Perfect.

This trail was absolutely beautiful and well worth the hike. There is a small part that has rocks and could be challenging for people who have children, but the views were worth it!

I second the advice of other reviewers: go clockwise. The way up is a bit steeper that way but you have handrails and steps to make it work. Overall, great trail. Not a fan of road noise when it gets close near one of the tunnels but the views and the trails are great.

Strenuous challenge. Definitely take it clockwise! Views are great on the 1mi lake trail, conquering comes on the gulch trail. Look up and around often to catch multiple perspectives. Realized I’m very right foot dominant and left foot is supporting, highly analytical which made leaping across rocks, logs and creeks challenging and doubt-inducing. I’m very good at calculating risk, abilities and safest means while others are excellent t at quick reflexes and response time.
