Getting There

This trail is an aggressive hiking trail that takes trail users along a scenic route of the Big Sioux River. A suspension bridge goes over the river where the majority of the trail is located. This trail winds along with the Big Sioux on one side and a large prairie area on the other. A pretty impressive hill provides an awe-inspiring view. The archery trail connects to this trail. Park visitors may want to do a treasure hike using a GPS unit to find coordinates set by park staff. Horseback riders can access the trail from their own designated parking lot. Snowmobilers can take advantage of the trail during the winter months.

follow the road all the way to the bottom of the hill and turn left to park by the shelter for the Prairie Vista Trail head. There is an $8 daily entrance fee if you do not have State Park Pass.

From Brandon SD, take Hwy 11 (splitrock blvd) south to Sioux Blvd, take Sioux Blvd north to Park St, turn west on Park St and the Park is 1/4 west on the north side of the road.

All in all, this is my favorite trail I’ve done in eastern South Dakota. I recommend hiking the trail CLOCKWISE, which has a number of advantages: (1) the incline is more gradual, (2) the vista at the top reveals itself more suddenly, (3) you are going the same way as the archers doing the archery loop, so if you accidentally end up on that loop, you’ll be in a safer situation. Speaking of the archery loop, it’s great. Also, the disk golf course right off the trail near the campground is wonderful. Recommended time to go would be about 5:30 or 6:00 on a clear midsummer morning. Ah, peace and quiet!

Carefull driving 25mph in Brandon. I got warning-Thanks Park entrance is $6 Trail was under water so ran alternative route . It was good but also ran into water at both ends. There is new extension on north end. You will enjoy.

Fun trail with a lot of great views. A small section is aggressively uphill and wear you out if not prepared. The nature sounds are always present and views are spectacular for eastern South Dakota.

This is FAR from "Aggressive"! I love this trail for exercising my dog, and myself, as well as early morning (sunrise) photography, but this is FAR from "Aggressive" (Maybe for YOUNG children I guess)

Holy Mosquitos, Batman! I'd definitely consider this a moderate hike at most, and that's considering that I pretty much sprinted up the hill to get away from the swarms of 'skeeters. The views are gorgeous from the top though!

Great scenic hike close to home. I would rate this more moderate than hard. There is one steep incline, and one decline, otherwise this trail is pretty much flat

It was my first time riding the trail and it was a great uphill workout I must say. The downhill wasn't bad and was able to gain some good speed. Trail was well maintained so high five to the park!

It's a fun moderate hike. A little confusing to get to footbridge but after that the trail is fairly obvious. Had a great time training for Philmont with my sons and recommend the trail.

First to Review

This trail has big views and is a good length for a workout. The beginning goes through a disc golf course and could be a little confusing the first time through. Just head West until you get to the footbridge over the river. I hiked it counter clockwise and after you cross the foot bridge you go up and up to the top of the ridge. Big breezy views await. Prairie and few trees on this trail. Great for keeping bugs away in the breeze. Dirt trail then loops down to the Big Sioux River and then back to the trail head. @backpackerneil
