McCurdy Gulch Loop is a 6.5 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Rapid City, South Dakota that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips.
About five miles of the trail is mostly uphill, and that would be fine if there were views. But the trees block most of what you can see. It’s extremely difficult to stay on the trail unless you’re using the map the majority of the time because what you think is quite obviously the trail actually is not.
It was essentially all fire road except in the beginning and end. I think the 4.2 mile tamarack trail loop is better and a bit steeper. Wish I had worn running shoes - would have been a decent run. My dog loved it;)
mostly gravel road, some area overgrownbut still a trail. many intersections, carry this map with you it is easy to get off track.
I was looking for a good jogging trail and this one fit the mileage I was looking for. It’s not marked and portions are easy to make the wrong turn. Very little level spots along this loop as well so I don’t recommend it for jogging. There are certain stretches where you will be forced to walk in tall grass. Watch out for ticks, I found one on my leg after the jog.
Trail was dry and open with only a few trees blown down across it. Overall a great trail to explore below Pactola dam.
