Grace Coolidge Fishing Area Trail is a 5.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Custer, South Dakota that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, running, and fishing and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
nice trail with a lovely lake st the end if you start at the southern end. We recommend starting at the campground end because you go up first and then come back down.
We walked this trail with our dog, who does not understand log bridges. It caused great merriment in the path, as I had to carry her over most of the crossings. She's only 30 pounds, so that's not too bad, but at 15 crossings I wish see would have gotten better at it. We saw two bald eagles harassing an osprey at the lake, so that was fun. Almost nobody on the trail, past maybe five sets of people both ways.
This trail is beautiful but it is definitely easy. More of a stroll than a hike. We did this one after a 14.5 mile hike the day before so it was a nice distance to get out again while giving the legs a rest. There is a little bit of poison ivy around the creek crossing but we both wore shorts with no problem. It’s mostly well off the trail.
Loved this trail and took a sauntering pace to take it all in. Highly recommend!
This is an easy trail. Several water crossings. If you plan on walking through the water you can were sandals or flip flops. If you choose not to get wet, wear pants and closed shoes. The Poison Ivy is overgrown. The trail is like a road. If you use the small bridges, it is often a side trail about 6" wide, and overgrown. Tons of little dams and very beautiful. I had someone drop me of at Center Lake and did one way.
It's a very pretty and easy walk. You follow a creek that you need to cross a few times. The wooden planks are in good condition. You go through the woods a lot. And it seems it is also an ATV trail. I gave it 4 stars because there is not much variety during the walk and I frankly got a bit bored with the scenery.
This was a great trail to do! Especially with the kids. We did the full out and back. Goes along the creek and you can hike to the peaceful babble of water. There is a lot of poison ivy on the edge of the trail so definitely wear closed toe shoes and pants!
03/28/20: A bit icy and muddy in March but still a lovely easy trail next to the creek.
Today trail was on a clear sunny day... we were told it’s a nice trail. We did this trail in conjunction with the Creekside Trail (Volksmarch seasonal hike). The only issue was all the foot bridges were out!!!! So scramble over or get wet??? The River was still fast from the ‘flood advisory’ but doable!!!
