French Creek gently meanders through Custer State Park and French Creek Natural Area. The trail crosses the creek many times. In dry months, the first mile of creek from the east trailhead flows underground leaving a dry stream bed. The Narrows is where the creek inches together and access is limited to climbing over the cliff (a steep embankment of 60 feet) or swimming (100 feet) through the creek. Poison ivy is abundant all along the trail.

There is a trail but not a "maintained" trail more like a natural pathway. The path and the river meander back & forth so you must cross the river several times. I had kids with me and we only made it across 3 spots.....River was running too fast and water was chest deep on the kids!!! If we had been prepared for a swim would have made a great adventure!! Wear river shoes and swimsuit;)

Trail is 12.1 miles -- 24.2 up and back (trailhead to trailhead), not 3.8 miles. Lots of poison ivy, rattlesnakes and 42 creek crossings. At the narrows, there's 60 foot climb or 100 yard swim. No real hiking path at places, more suited for horseback.

Awesome trail for horseback riding and dogs. Definitely ideal for being on horseback as the trail is not maintained for hikers. Lots of big open spaces and pretty rivers to cross. ❤️

we didn't take the hike because as we began we were warned by an employee of the park that it was more like 12 mi and littered with poison ivy and had to be careful of rattlesnakes like the sign says and it's not well maintained.
