Raven Cliff Falls is the king of South Carolina waterfalls at an estimated 420 feet. Matthews Creek plunges off Raven Cliff Mountain at the Blue Ridge Escarpment near Caesars Head. The escarpment is where the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian chain) drop abruptly 2,000 feet to the Piedmont below. This sudden drop is the geologic reason why there are so many falls in the area. it is one of the most scenic and photographed waterfalls in the state. It was named for the ravens that breed in the high cliffs forming the falls. Over 150 species of ravens have been identified in this region.

This was a beautiful hike. Good mix of ups and downs with a lot of lush ground cover and lovely sights. The view of the falls was partially obscured due to the fullness of the canopy, and it was quite far in the distance, but nice to see just the same. We began our return just as the thunder started. The rain poured down shortly afterward so the descent turned into a trail run, which was really great, seriously! Turns out this is a great place for a trail run, if that’s what you’re into. Definitely recommend this trail.

Hiked with Michael Sheriff on 8/15. Easy enjoyable hike. Temperature pleasant in high 70’s. In Easley it was in 90’s so this was refreshing. Trail in great shape. Good light weight hike to nice view.

i did this trail in 9-30-17 and found it to be an extremely easy trail to hike and follow. since i did it during the off season the trail wasn't filled with people which make it nice to have a chat with the other hikers. its one of the popular trails in the ceasars head state park and you do have to by a pass at the visitor center to do any of the trails. i was told if you don't have a pass on your windshield you will get a ticket and maybe get towed. the trail is nice but won't wow you and there is a nice pavilion you can sit at to enjoying viewing the falls. from here you can follow the trail down to the bottom of the falls. not my favorite trail but i'm glad i had the chance to do it. to be honest with you i enjoyed the little 3 tenth of a mile trail and overlook at the visitor center more. the views their are outstanding.

very beautiful trail that's heavily forested. takes about an hour each way. the waterfall view is quite far away though.

Quick and easy!

This trail was very nice with just enough steep grades to feel like you put in some work without being completely drained when you're finished. In all it took us 2.5 hours and that's including hanging out at the viewing area to see the waterfall for a bit. The only downside is that, to get up close to the waterfall, you have to take some alternate routes. Other than that we loved it!

Really great trail for carrying babies or walking dogs - well traveled! Pretty view of the waterfall at the end and a nice covered patio to stop for lunch and rest.

Good trail, on the easier side of moderate. The waterfall is beautiful, but the viewing deck is very far away from the actual falls.

I would rate this trail as easy, but I guess the length is why it is rated moderate. The trail is well defined and well trafficked. I would rate this higher if the overlook was closer to the falls.

Well maintained and easily marked trail. I enjoyed it! Easy and fun hike. Roughly 1.5-2 hours with photo ops and some downtime at the lookout. Dog friendly, but be aware there are a few flights of stairs/up-down areas.

We did Raven Cliff Falls + Gum Gap + Naturaland Trust Trails so we could go to the bridge above the falls. It was 6+ miles RT and I'd say moderate is a fair assessment. We had three dogs with us. Mine is a 19 lbs dachshund-mix and he was just about done-for when we got back to the cars. Great hike but I don't need to do it again.

Great 1.5-2 hour hike for 2 novice 60 year old hikers in reasonable shape. Well shaded with mildly challenging elevations.

Fun and quick hike my wife and I did in our anniversary. Wanting to go all the way to the falls though - that would be epic!

Nice, pretty easy hike, with moderate ups and downs, but not so much you can't keep up a good pace. Very much enjoyed the view! I actually liked that you aren't at the base of the falls because then you get to take in the surroundings and see how tall the falls are. did the out and back in <1.5 hrs walking fast. only issue was people had left several pieces of litter along the trail...LNT folks!

Lovely even with all the fog, but we unfortunately could not see the falls. Hip started being unhappy the last 1/4 mi so the last rocky uphill climb was uncomfortable. Lots of orange salamanders present. some cool snails and slugs, too.

Very nice hike, my first time I was a little disappointed, I thought you would get closer to the falls, still worth the time.

Great view of the of the falls at the end of the trail. We hiked this with our boys (ages 7,5, and 5). Very doable for our kids, although it is longer than the 3.5 listed here. From the parking lot the map has it 2.2 miles to the observation point, so 4.4 there and back vs 3.5.

Great trail and a nice reward to see the falls across the valley.

Falls seems beautiful but is VERY far away from the end of this trail. Think you can do another several miles to get right at the falls. Well marked with red

Started at this trail (did a 12 mile loop). Easy to moderate. Over 2 miles to get to the waterfall overlook.

Moderate trail which has a nice look out view at the end. Well defined path with lots of nice views along the way. I highly recommend this trail for beginners and experts.
