Getting There

Raven Cliff Falls is the king of South Carolina waterfalls at an estimated 420 feet. Matthews Creek plunges off Raven Cliff Mountain at the Blue Ridge Escarpment near Caesars Head. The escarpment is where the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian chain) drop abruptly 2,000 feet to the Piedmont below. This sudden drop is the geologic reason why there are so many falls in the area. it is one of the most scenic and photographed waterfalls in the state. It was named for the ravens that breed in the high cliffs forming the falls. Over 150 species of ravens have been identified in this region.

South Carolina Department of Parks and Tourism, 1205 Pendleton Street, suite 248 , Columbia, SC, 29201, Phone: 803-734-0122

Directions from Greenville: Drive northwest on US 276. Continue to the parking area for the Raven Cliff Falls Trail, which is on the right one mile beyond Caesars Head State Park. The trailhead is across the road and marked with red blazes.

HikingGreat!

Moderate trail due to distance, approximately 4 miles. Limited elevation gain, but does have some ladders and steps. Today the Falls was raging due to the recent rain. The Falls were visual by the nice platform at the turn around point. (As other reviews indicate, this trail is a distant view of the Falls. A longer trail will get you closer to the Falls.) Get early to the parking lot or you won’t be enjoying the hike due to no parking. It is a small lot. I got there at 8:40 and there was 2 parking spaces left when I arrived. Thanks to all the trail maintenance for the beautiful platform to enjoy the Falls from. The trail is busy.

We were really upset. This trail takes you to a look out and not to the base of the falls.

Well maintained trail but unless we did it wrong, the 4.4 mile distance takes you to the lookout platform, not the base of the falls. There was another loop that we were told would get much closer to the actual falls but we had younger kids with us and just hadn’t planned for something closer to 6-7 miles.

HikingGreat!

Easy walk in the woods, this is the perfect hike for a family. Fairly flat, not long, and as long as you arrive early there is plenty of parking. You get views of the falls from a nice, large platform. As a trail runner I think this would be a great trail run. Next time that’s what I’ll plan for on this trail. We hiked this on Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend, and arrived at the parking lot around 8:25. Plenty of parking in both lots. When we left around 10 AM both lots were full. Note that these lots serve several trail heads.

Great trail, shaded. Excellent hike for dogs. I have an active senior dog and this was great for her. Only one section with steps that you may need to help your dog. Able to hear a few warblers but couldn’t find them through the foliage. Nice view of falls at the end. Not too crowded. Able to park at 845am without an issue.

Worn but brilliant hiking to the platform overlook. Plenty of water on the falls. Well worth the 4+ miles round trip plus hazy view from nearby Caesars Head SP towards Table Rock.

Nice hike with a pretty waterfall in the distance at the end. Our 8 year old hiked it with no problem. No poles needed on this hike. Parts of the trail feel like you are in a jungle. It was pretty cool.

Nice moderate trail. Lots of roots and some narrow paths next to cliffs so keep the little ones close. The view at the end was beautiful of the falls and the nice gazebo was relaxing. Not too many people on trail. We arrived at 10:30 and had to park in overflow lot so get there early. No bathrooms raven Cliff trail head so use one at Caesar head state park welcome center first. It is 4.4 miles round trip.

The trail is well kept and pretty wide across. The view is quite far away but still a gorgeous waterfall. Not much elevation

Nice trail and workout. Due to parking, we parked at the visitors center, walked a mile down the road to the trailhead. Worked out. Will be doing this one again over the winter for the views. Worth it!

Pretty flat for the majority of the hike. The trail was wide and clear. There was a nice gazebo at the end of the overlook. Will definitely be back to hike closer to the falls.

The trail is well maintained. No getting lost here. But the falls are so far away when you hit the end of the trail that it’s a bit anti-climactic.

Beautifully shaded, wooded trail with tons of toadstools and rhododendrons. Forget the sunscreen. Bring the insect repellant. The waterfall is gorgeous but very far away. I think next time we’ll take a trail that gets us a little closer. The trail is moderately strenuous. Some hikers had small children who seemed to be fairing ok. Would definitely do this one again. 4 stars only because parking is tough (at least it was on a Saturday). Get there early for a space.

good trail, easy to follow, vertical changes easy, under shady trees, the Scenic Overlook was okay. I’d recommend skipping the Overlook and keep heading northwest to get a closer view of the Falls

Enjoyable trail, very well kept and well worn. Relatively easy to the over look with a few steep places but very manageable. Nice view of the falls, probably better in the fall or winter without so many leaves. Saw lots of woodpeckers including 4 pileated. Nice area walking through a tunnel of rhododendrons.
