I've hiked the Lake Moultrie Passage twice, once as a group and once solo. Both times these were section hikes. After emerging from the forests of Francis Marion on the Swamp Fox Passage, this was a nice reprieve. Expansive views of the lake for the first 5 or so miles to Bonneau Beach. After some brief road walking, you pick back up on the levee/dike, where you will spend the next 20 miles or so. Most of this is relatively flat, boring, and potentially hot. There are some opportunities to view wildlife, but its limited to birds and the occasional gator on the banks. Make sure you stop at Sandy Beach if you have the time, its by far the most beautiful part of the passage. The last leg/section that runs from the old Santee Canal to the Cross Generating Station is a nice break from the sun, traversing through surrounding wetlands with a fair amount of foot bridges to keep the feet dry. Viper Rd. to finish is a road walk with a walk on the shoulder of busy State Highway 45 until you get to Eadie Lane. Watch out for off leash dogs around here.

A satisfying hike no matter what you’re looking for. Makes for a satisfying short hike if you go from 17 out to the lake for a nice snack on the water. Or a beautiful leg of the freak palmetto trail for a great backpacking trip. There were some puddles at the start but with a way around so if you aren’t looking to dodge some puddles then go another day. Also there is no shade on the lakeside so plan accordingly. All in all a refreshing satisfying hike.

Short out and back from a short distance down trail from the western trailhead. Despite all the rain recently, not too wet, except in a few places

I rode my mountain bike along this section. It follows the dike around the lake and as others have noted, the wind coming off the lake can be pretty strong. Not the most exciting part of the trail.

wind comes strong off the lake. would probably cool you off in the summer, but bites in the winter

Very nice, clear trail. Some makeshift boardwalks in the really muddy places, very flat and completely wooded. You do cross several major highways as well. I love this trail, and will definitely use it again.

Walked this during a 100 mile section hike of the Palmetto Trail. After coming out of the swamp with the Swamp Fox Passage this was a welcome change. Take the extra spur trail and camp at the Sandy Beach Camp Site, best camping in the 100 miles we completed.

This is a good trail for viewing wildlife, but some parts lose the signage and is hard to tell which way to go.

This is an okay section of the Palmetto Trail. There is a great amount of flat walking but be warned that about 4 miles is walking through paved roads where there can be quite a bit of traffic. Nice view of the lake and canals.

This is a great mountain bike ride. It is not difficult but great views of swamp, the lake, and almost always see alligators, deer, turkeys, and bald eagles. Be sure to take the side trail to Sandy Beach. Wear orange during hunting season.
