The main stem of this nearly 100 mile long hiking trail extends from Table Rock State Park in Pickens County, to Oconee State Park in Oconee County. The trail crosses some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in the Southeast and provides access to Sassafrass Mountain, the highest peak in South Carolina, and to major mountain streams and breathtaking views. The section of trail from Sloan Bridge to Burrell's Ford Road is a wooded area that starts near the East Fork of the Chattooga River. The Trail then passes an impressive waterfall, ascends to SC 107 near the Walhalla Fish Hatchery, then drops to the Chattooga River Gorge area at Burrell's Ford Road where a walk-in campground is located near the river.

Great easy hike with great mileage. Over 6 miles total. Great views of the river also.

We hiked this for the Make-A-Wish Trailblaze Challenge. AMAZING hike. Tired, sore but SO worth it!

We parked @ Sloan Bridge and hiked to Burrell’s Ford and back. Consider doing the reverse if you want the more moderate hike the first half and don’t mind driving down the gravel road to Burrell’s Ford to start. Spectacular Spring day. Chattooga River was rushing. Fresh, new green growth and wildflowers abounded. Sections with lots of roots but others covered with easier pine straw. Great views along the way. Trail well maintained.

The Foothills Trail section between Sloan Bridge and the Fish Hatchery Rd. is fairly easy with some nice waterfalls and plenty of streams. The section between the Fish Hatchery Rd. and Burrell's Ford encompasses ridges and mountain tops and offers nice views when the trees are leafless. Starting at Burrell's Ford means a heart pumping climb up Medlin Mountain.
