This a great little slice of the FHT that is capable for most all ages. The hike gives you the feel of deep woods due to the incredible terrain. The trail has only one real tricky area for small kids but other than that it is a great stroll through beautifully ravined country. There is a great boulder filed with a natural shelter if it rains.

We did this hike on a Sunday and saw only 2 people on the trail until we got to the top of Sassafras Mtn. Starting at Foothills Trail parking lot off Hwy 178 near Rocky Bottom, we went to Sassafras (via Chimney Top Gap) and back down in about 5 hours. The trailhead is just across the street near the bridge. A total of just over 9 miles. We had lunch at the top of the mountain and took some great photos. This is a challenging trail, but a fun hike. We had hoped to start at Sassafras and go to Table Rock, but Hurricane Irma got her way and messed up some of the trails so, which were closed and we did not get to hike over. Next time!

We hiked from laurel valley to the top of Sassafras Mountain. It's 4.7 miles with a pretty consistent incline the whole way. It was very well maintained and a great hike! We definitely got a good workout!
