very enjoyable trail for a fall afternoon. just make sure to be aware of your surroundings, as this trail is used by both hikers and mountain bikers.
Great moderate trail. Well marked & maintained. 95% shaded. We did both the Big Rock Trail & the Tower Trail Loops for a total of 8.35 miles. The bench near the connector trail is perfectly placed for a snack break. We passed 2 other hikers and 2 mountain bikers. There was a bit of road noise but it wasn't disruptive. We passed the tower by the road on the drive in and stopped to check it out. The stairs to do connect with the ground so unless you are into acrobatics or climbing the sides of the tower, don't plan on going to the top. We didn't notice the tower from the trail but maybe because we were focused on the trail. There were lots of beautiful wildflowers.
Absolutely loved this trail. Mildly challenging hike, with uneven ground and some hills. Mostly shady. There's a bench about half way through the loop. The trail was well marked and there were markers indicating every half mile. We kept a leisurely pace with frequent stops to admire the view, and completed the trail in just under two hours.
This trail is actually 5.7 miles. Not the tower either. Still worth the hike without a doubt. Most excellent rock formations to take pictures, looks like a fun mountain bike trail, lots of centipedes, birds, snails & even a few snakes. It was pouring when we hiked it so we had plenty of muddy spots lol They leveled down a bunch of the forest along the trail. Idk why. The parking area is a off the path but not to bad to find. We parked at the north entrance off 661.
it was great but beware of fast bikers. not much space. can be dangerous with a dog that doesn’t listen.
This is an awesome trail for everyone. There were a lot of mud puddles but that just brought more character to this trail. Quite peaceful and not a lot of traffic. Not too hard not too easy. This trail by far was clearest trail I’ve hiked on so far w/ concise directions AND it had a few rest spots which was nice especially if you have kids. My 8 and 10 yr gave it a two thumbs up!
The Big Rock Trail Loop is rough enough to have fun but clean enough to keep a good speed. Short but sweet.
Easy single track for walkers, runners and bikes. Today there wasn’t another soul on the trail. I noticed a little debris left on the trail...a freshly broken bicycle chain, a can of Off and oddly, a flosser. I absolutely believe in flossing but I’m sure with my coordination that were I flossing and hiking at the same time, I would have a terrible end. I brought this stuff out.
