Drive this road daily and having driven some truly scenic roads there is nothing extraordinary about this road and I would recommend driving any "country" road over this road. During certain times you can expect nightmarish traffic during the summer due to tourists. Unless you take 1A you will never get a view of anything except trees and an occasional glimpse of normal houses. If driving at night be mindful of the abundance of wildlife on the road.
This is a short but very beautiful coastal drive along the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay. And Newport provides many wonderful opportunities to see unique treasures.
A wonderful scenic drive. The traffic is heavy in places but come for the beauty and the charm. If you are in a hurry take I-95.
From Westerly to Plum Point and Narragansett Bay, Routes 1 and 1A are filled with oceanside beauty. Nothing specific, except the smell and sight of the ocean and shore. Also, while I believe that you haven't really experienced the east coast until you've driven Rte 1, I also recognize that much of it is a traffic nightmare. This is just NICE. No huge tourist destinations, unless you turn toward Newport, but a really nice drive.
