Backyard views of the famous mansions to one side, a beautiful rocky coastline to the other Would you call a home with 70 rooms a cottage? If not, you're obviously not Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The Breakers, the "summer cottage" of the 19th-century multimillionaire, is one of a dozen mansions in Newport that are now by far the city's top attractions. Many of the homes are open to the public for tours, giving you a peek into the lives of the privileged. For a view of the mansions from the backyards, take the Cliff Walk, which runs south along Newport's cliffs from Easton's Beach (also called First Beach) to Bailey's Beach. The promenade has views of opulent mansions on one side and the rocky coastline on the other; walking any section of it is worth the effort.

Did it front to back with my lab mix. Amazing scenary. Paved most of the way but included some rock climbing. Took about 3 hours (one way) with a bunch of stops for pix (if you didnt make it to the beautiful sandy beach at the end, you did not finish the trail!). Definitely recommend.

Nice, easy trail from 1st Beach to The Breakers. Beautiful views and plenty of guard rails for those that are uncomfortable about heights.

My gosh, so gorgeous. Loved this trail. A few slots absolutely not good if you’re not wearing good grip shoes- jumping rocks and such. But so worth it. Would have gone further but didn’t start until an hour before sunset. Would 100% recommend.

This is a very flat, accessible walk, paved with a lot of wheelchair friendly areas. Offers a pretty view of the sea and the mansions. As crowded as you'd expect, but worth going if you are in the area

We went the weekend after Labor Day and this was still very busy, especially the sections near the Breakers and the University. This hike is quite easy with the exception of the southern 1-mile which has some rocky sections. I would be concerned about footwear if you plan to do the whole hike. Download the app so you can read about the 16 signposts along the trail. The houses are awesome and the water views are fantastic. Along with visiting a few of the mansions, this will give you a great day in Newport.

A Newport must for gorgeous ocean views. Overcrowded and frustrating between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Beautiful views of the ocean and the mansions that grace the cliffs property. This trail was and easy hike and most of the path is paved. This app should do a better job at explaining where to park. The trailhead has no parking and the adjacent street, Cliff Street, has No Parking signs all along it. We were fortunate to have found a side street that was about at the halfway point of the trail and there was and access point there.

Gorgeous walk along the rocks and water. Plenty of places to get off the path and look for shells or rest in the shade. We brought a picnic and it was perfect. I come here frequently to get cardio in while at the beach!
