Near Washington's Grist Mill in Perryopolis. (2 miles) Just up the hill from the Layton trailhead is the Washington Grist Mill. George Washington purchased 1,600 acres here in 1769 where he built a grist mill and distillery. This section of trail features two sets of mile markers. The original P&LE markers measuring rail miles to Pittsburgh and the new plastic Great Allegheny Passage merkers for trail miles to Cumberland.

More ideal for bicycling than walking. Follows the river but no access to the river until past this route.
