If you're looking for a different hike, this one's for you. A lot of industrial ruins in the hollow itself, from a quarry and sewer pipe plant that operated until the early 1900's. Make sure you read the stories that gave the place its name on the Allegheny Land Trust website. Witch Hazel Trail starts off with a climb of 400' through a series of switchbacks, which are very nicely designed and make the climb a manageable experience. Best part about this trail is the absence of traffic noise. You can hear an occasional train on the other side of the river, which is rather pleasant. The trail flattens out at the top of the hill and passes by a 15 acre habitat regeneration area - kind of ugly but interesting. At the trailhead, a township employee warned me about rabid raccoons and coyotes. His advice - "Don't pet the wild animals"! Also, a few weeks ago, I saw a tent in the hollow - you can backpack if you check with the folks at Allegheny Land Trust first. You definitely earn a few macho points for staying overnight in a place called Dead Man's Hollow!
