This isn't the actual Twin Lakes Trail. This is a nicely groomed path that loops around the lake. The Twin Lakes Trail can be accessed by taking the Black Cherry Trail, which starts at the lower campground and intersects with the Twin Lakes Trail about a mile in. The whole Twin Lakes Trail is approximately 17 miles from the Black Cherry Trail all the way to where it intersects with the North Country Trail. There is another map of this trail on AllTrails if you search it.

People seem to be confusing this trail with the TWIN LAKES TRAIL which is a 17 mile point to point trail which starts about a mile in from the campground, via the Black Cherry Trail. This loop trail is less than a mile, and is very well maintained (sort of a crushed stone surface) that loops around the entire lake. It takes you across the spillway and through some lightly wooded areas, with benches situated at the various locations along the trail. There's a beautiful vista at the far end of the lake, just veer off the trail and head towards the upper pavilion. The Rec Area is closed during winter months, and the gate along the main road is secured, however you can park and still walk in, it's about a 1/2 mile walk. If you are camping at the campground, make a point to walk the trail at NIGHT. Bring a headlamp or flashlight, you'll love it! The trail is also perfect for cross country skiing!

90% of the 15.8 mile trail has been cleaned up and re-Marked. Friends of Twin Lakes Members Robbie Fitzpatrick, Erik Anderson and Stephanie Hayduck have been working hard since winter and continue to work on the Trail. Great hike check it out.

A bridge was out across one of the creeks and was not passable without it.

Trail is poorly marked in areas, Not a lot of trail maintenance until you get into the Twin Lakes area where people car camping do day hikes. Some areas were overgrown, Once you get past the overgrown areas into the lake area it was nice.

Hated this trail. Where it was clear cut, briars and bramble made the trail nearly impassable, I didn't like the oil wells. all in all... not a real enjoyable hike. I love the Kane area, and I love the wilderness, but I just did not connect with this trail at all. I even got lost at one point, the trail was so poorly marked and so little traversed. ..But I had my trusty Garmin breadcrumber...

This trailhead is located in the Twin Lakes recreation area. My hike was in summer and the overgrowth made for a difficult hike. combined with the wet, dewy mornings, soaked within hours. I never end short of a hike, but this one i did. Best to go in the spring to avoid the overgrowth. Overall, The Allegheny Natl Forest is awesome to hike. mileage is round trip.
