Getting There

The bike/jog trail in North Park is a fairly broad paved burm of the road tracing a 5 mile path around North Park Lake. For half of the trail, bikers and joggers share the space but along the one-way Lake Shore Drive, bikers and pedestrians each get their own lane traveling clockwise and share another combined lane in the other direction. There are places to park all along the route along with many water fountains, rest rooms, picnic shelters and playgrounds. There are also more than a dozen Geocaches located within park boundries, four less than 1,000 feet off the path. One could spend a whole day logging them all, and racking up about 15 miles of hiking.

North Park Office 724-935-1971

While there are half a dozen places along the route to park, the largest lot is at the Boat House set in the middle of the park. There are multiple approaches but one could take I-79 N or Rt 19 N to Rt 910 E and Wexford. Then Pierce Mill Rd. South to the park. Ingmar Rd to Babcock Blvd and then to the other end of Pierce Mill Rd may be a more direct route.

Much better trail than when we hiked this spring. Lots of chipmunks and 32 deer sighted over the trail. Perfect day!!!

Great hike! I started at the point that would traditionally be considered the end/exit (opposite side of the road from the Olympia pavilion) and found it much easier to see the solid red blazes throughout the entirety of the trail. This allowed me to just enjoy the hike and not check the map as much as I did the last time here. (last time was a little confusing and my route consisted of a mixture of solid red and red with blue/green dot blazes) Awesome weather, cool and drizzly day, but didnt get wet because of the thick forest canopy, and benefited from less traffic on the trail because of it. As mentioned, very little traffic, mostly mountain bikers and some runners. The majority of people were communicative as they were approaching, which was something I didn't experience my previous go around here. All in all a great day!

We cut the trail loop short and made a detour onto the Rachel Carson north route. Convient parking at the trailhead with bathrooms. This was Ethan’s first trail. Bikers and trail runners do come up behind you. Trail has good shade from the trees. Good trail markings, red dots on trees and well worn trail. Easy family walk.

Great hike! Well maintained and easy to follow trail blazes (for the most part). Saw lots of deer, blue jays, chipmunks, squirrels and even a woodpecker. Shaded most of the way, so even on a hot day it was enjoyable. Not many people on the trail, other than some mountain bikers and a couple of trail runners. *suggestion to mountain bikers, please use call-outs when approaching hikers...especially during a global pandemic! Not one biker signaled their approach. I was more than happy to move aside and put on my mask, but a few times I was startled and jumped out of the way without time to "mask-up."

Great trail, well maintained. The blazes do change from red to red with a black circle within to a red blaze by a yellow blaze to a red blaze with a green dot within. The trail on the app is perfect. Loads of wildlife, great parts shade and sun, wonderful workout.

Nice trail! Lots of pretty trees and deer. A good workout. The sound of the road was a bit annoying, but the trail itself was very enjoyable.

Great trail for a longer hike. I never really felt like there was any particular section of the trail that was more challenging than another- which was nice for a long, sustained hike. TONS of mountain bikers along the way, but all were friendly and respectful (even to my dog!). Well marked.

Wonderful trail run as always but some of the bikers were not respecting social distancing with each other or me. Hikers were better but some didn’t seem to understand to go single file when passing others where the trail was narrow.

First 5 miles is switchbacks and exciting, last portion is mainly a wider flat path. Closer to 9 miles with new trail pieces.
