Musser Gap Trail is a 7.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near State College, Pennsylvania that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Nice hike with a good climbing ridge to reach a lovely vista of State College. The ascent is a good work out, and if you enjoy the burn in your calves this is the hike for you. The whole loop is very doable in about one hour, with time to look at the vista. Fall is a great season to go, and if you want wild flowers you can see several species spring through summer. My favourite thing to see are the sassafras and spice bushes along the first part of the trail, before reaching the creek.
Fun afternoon hike! The Musser Gap trail is mostly gravel- gets challenging and more fun when veering off into Frog Hollow & going up to the Hubler Gap vista, where you get more woodsy trails and rocks. Very well marked- definitely recommend taking a photo of the map at the trailhead, though!
There were a few downed trees on Frog Hollow, but other than that the trail was well maintained. Beautiful vistas and fun terrain.
Beautiful trail... but no reason at all to start on Whitehall Rd. (construction, no parking) unless you want to add 3 easy/nondescript miles to the route walking through suburbia/farmland and cornfields. Much better to start at the nice parking lot off of Rt. 45... and you can add on more mileage by doing some of the side trails if you're so inclined (Frog Hollow, Mountain Mist, MST, etc.). Gorgeous views though. Fun trail to hike.
This is far from 7 miles folks, I just did this hike and it was a beautiful one at that! Some power line walking but in order to make a nice trek I had to do musser gap, to frog hollow, then mountain mist to the mid state which I took to Roman tower, down Downer trail out to the high line vista then back through the old reservoir. That all got me 10.2 so don't be fooled, musser gap trail is a nice short hike on a nice flat gravel road unless you take side trails and add alternate trails.
