Rail-trail through reclaimed strip mines. Open fields and tall grasses.(6 Miles) The steady climb that began Nort at Imperial peaks near Champion where the Montour Trail passes beneath Route 22. This section of the trail is very open as it passes through reclaimed and inactive strip mines. With a clear view of the sky, the trail along this section can get quite hot. There is a second significant hill that peaks at Quicksilver but since the trail has returned to a more tree-lined and shaded environment, it doesn't seem quite as difficult. Of course, with railroad grades, difficult is a relative term. Mine runoff can also make the trail rough or washed out in places. The trail maintainers don't let it get too bad, though.

Be careful of fourwheelers and dirt bikes on this section of the trail.

Not a great section of trail for bikes, unless looking for a challenge. Was sandy and muddy when I went, and the trail cuts off towards Mcdonald where they are building the new turnpike section. Had to turn around and go up a slight grade on wet sandy trail.

Not the most beautiful stretch of the Montour trail, but we saw very few people which was nice. There is an enormous bald-faced hornet nest hanging over the trail near MM 11.5. Be careful!

Pretty nice hard pack to get some high gear spins on a mountain bike. Expect to have company along the trail with bikers, joggers, and walkers. Rode in October on a nice sunny day and the falling leaves added to a pleasant ride. Not suitable for a road bike.
