State Turnpike Laurel Hill Tunnel. The hike starts at a designated parking area on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. You travel northeast right to the top of the tunnel. The tunnel itself is now private property but you can still see a good bit of it from up above.
None.
You're on top of the tunnel when you exit the woods and are on the rocky, clear cut, power right-of-way. The eastern end of the tunnel is just off to the right at the bottom of the hill.
No private property involved. You can park at a designated trail parking location by traveling on Schafer Run Rd from the east.
if you want to see the tunnel itself make a right at old water tower and go down over hill.
The LHHT part of the trail was well marked and maintained. The part where you have to leave the LHHT was not marked at all. I ended up just staying on LHHT after searching for it. I’ll come back in the fall to see if I can find it.
Beautiful trail; shady and surprisingly bug free today. Only saw a few other hikers. Rocky terrain in parts but very well maintained and enjoyable. Some steep uphills on the way out but made for an easier way back. If you can make it 3 miles out, you will get to walk over the incredible footbridge that crosses the PA turnpike, which we thought was really cool. Made for a perfect afternoon hike.
