the view was worth it. I just didn't personally enjoy the trail, much too rocky. Definitely do the loop counterclockwise.

Beautiful trail. Steps were a good workout. The MST was a bit rocky but super scenic, overall really enjoyable.

Went counterclockwise and enjoyed the climb at the beginning. The trail along the ridge is overgrown in some places, but very manageable. Some nice views. On the way down, on the pump trail, I stumbled upon a rattler. It rattled and I jumped. Neither of us were hurt, but keep your eyes open.

If you go counter-clockwise, this is almost a picture perfect trail. The steps are an awesome little workout in the beginning and they make retaining a nice pace for the plateau a cakewalk. The worst part -- surprise -- was people: I picked up a lot of trash on the small portion of gravel road you have to walk. At least all the joints on the ground were biodegradable. Parking is on the side of the road and I didn't have service, but the trails were easy to navigate and leads you right back to the trail head and parking.

Great view and nice hike overall. Definitely agree with prior comments that the way to do this is counterclockwise — do the steep, rocky part uphill and get it out of the way first. The MST is pretty overgrown in some parts and the bugs were really getting to my 7 year old, which were the only downsides.

First off, if you are going to do this exact trail, absolutely go counterclockwise. Going down the rock steps would be miserable. The section between the top of the rock steps and the view is pretty awful. It’s a ridge trail that’s super rocky. And not those big fun climbable rocks, but the type of rock where your ankles are always wondering if today is finally the day that they meet their fate. Once you get to the views, about a mile after the top of the stairs, they are quite nice! They’re by a campsite with a fire pit. But then you keep walking and maybe 0.2 miles later you realize there’s a parking lot and you’re like “well why the heck did I just spend 30 minutes hobbling over ankle biters”. And then the trail back down is fine, but nothing of note. I really enjoyed the rock stairs path up. It was steep and a great workout and challenge. And the views are pretty great. But the trail to get to views is awful and then you realize there was a much easier way to get there and it loses some of its magic. So, would I hike this again? No. BUT! Would I drive to the parking lot and hike the 0.2 miles in to that campsite and drink some whiskey at the nice views and spend a night under the stars? Most certainly.

The Indian Steps are steep but once up top it’s a nice flat walk along the Mid State Trail with beautiful vistas. It’s rocky but well marked.

We loved this hike! Very steep at the beginning but the views were worth it! Just keep looking for the orange markings.

Extremely rocky first half. Definitely would avoid the suggested direction, and ascend on the steep side.

Tough at beginning if going straight up to the top, but very scenic on the way to pump station trail. Very beautiful overall for a two hours hiking

Family with two little ones - 6 and 7 year olds enjoyed it! First part is difficult with it being straight uphill, but the kiddos enjoyed climbing up the rocks and had little problem getting to the top. Top of the ridge is rocky, so watch step - we gave the kids walking sticks to use in case of tripping. Beautiful views on both sides! Easy descent (small part on gravel road) on the pump station trail - mostly grassy path thru the trees, small spring on part of the trail near the bottom. Took us about 2.5 hours.

This was a great hike! Quite a workout the first ascent up the “stairs” and rocky along the ridge, but beautiful views off both sides of the mountain and a couple of spots to stop and take it all in! Lovely hike down on Pump Station Trail, forrest surrounding cleared trail. Will definitely do again!

Great family hike to do with older kids. Not crowded. Very steep in the beginning, most of it is walking the ridge with great views, and an easy gradual decline.

A bit tricky to find, but a nice hike for an afternoon. The first section is brutal, as it’s completely uphill, but once it evens out, the trail is a nice walk with some great views!

Nice trail, first half mile is tough, especially in the snow but definitely fun. Hiking on the ridge was great too with views at a few points, but the second half of the route was 100% road so a little boring in my opinion, but a nice getaway overall. Make sure to watch your footing as it's very rocky on the ridge.

I started off by going up the steep way and it was worth it. The MST section was great with challenging aspects and great views, but it wasn't marked very well in some spots. The best views are on the road section. I had to rush through the end of the hike due to incoming storms, but I will definitely do the hike again so I can take my time with it.
