Getting There

The Great Allegheny Passage was once called the Yough River Trail. Rail trail past a vast, abandoned mine complex into Cedar Creek Park. The most prominent feature of this section of the Youghiogheny River Trail is the abandoned Banning No.4 Mine. Most of the structures have been torn down but one structure remains and continues to operate. The pumping and filtration station is processing 8 million gallons of mine runoff a day to protect the Yough River ecosystem. The scenery improves dramatically as the trail continues South into Cedar Creek Park. This section of trail features two sets of mile markers. The original P&LE markers measuring rail miles to Pittsburgh and the new plastic Great Allegheny Passage markers for trail miles to Cumberland.

Beautiful. Great packed gravel path. Started at West Newton. Pretty busy on a perfect Saturday morning. More bikers than walkers.

Road bikingNo shade

A nice, easy ride. Only downside was the lack of shade for the longest part of that section of the GAP.

Running

This is a really nice trail. There's lots of places to sit and rest should you get tired. There's also a clean restroom to relieve yourself as well as water fountains for both you and your pets.

Nice Section of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. Theres a free tent and lean-to camp site just north of I-70. (However the all night trains are intense)

This part of the Great Allegheny Passage is my favorite. It has the West Newton Bike Shop and best of all, the Trailside Inn..Really good food!
