Getting There

The Great Allegheny Passage was once called the Yough River Trail. Crushed limestone surfaced rail-trail along the Youghiogheny River. (4 miles) Typical rail-trail conversion with an even and level surface of crushed limestone. Just north of the West Newton is a rebuilt replica of the rail station that once stood here and a combination rail car (combination of passenger and baggage) built in 1925. This will become the new headquarters of the Regional Trail Council. This section of trail features two sets of mile markers. The original P&LE markers measuring rail miles to Pittsburgh and the new plastic Great Allegheny Passage merkers for trail miles to Cumberland.

The Sutersville trailhead is accessable from the Irwin/North Huntingdon Turnpike Exit No. 67 via Rt. 30 West to Barns Lake Road. Turn left at the light onto Clay Pike to Rilton. Then turn right on Sutersville Road. The trailhead is just on the East side of the bridge across the Youghiogheny River. (lat: N40 14.467 lon: W79 48.355). There are porta-johns but no water. A Tastee-Freeze is open seasonally just up the street. The West Newton trailhed is located on the West side of the bridge where Route 136 crosses the Youghiogheny River. (lat: N40 12.651 lon: W79 46.197) The office of the Regional Trail Council is located just up the street in the basement of the Rite Aid building. There are also porta-johns and Korber's Bike Shop.

Flat, paved trail. 90% bikers. Not much of a hike on foot.

I ride this a lot especially when I’m training for a long distance ride. It’s great for getting a quick 8 mile ride in. I love the fact that I live close by and can get here in under 15 min.
