Getting There

The Great Allegheny Passage was once called the Yough River Trail. This section of trail features a unique geologic feature called a tufa. Rainwater percolates down through decaying vegetation and forms a stream that picks up carbonic aci. The acidic water dissolves the underlying limestone which then separates out a bit farther downstream as tufa, coating everything it comes in contact with. It's like a cave stalagtite that relies on a healthy ecosystem to survive and grow. It is one of the few such formations in the country. There is also the entirety of Cedar Creek Park which has hiking, camping, fishing and boating facilities. This section of trail features two sets of mile markers. The original P&LE markers measuring rail miles to Pittsburgh and the new plastic Great Allegheny Passage merkers for trail miles to Cumberland.
